This one was all about bringing the character back while giving it a fresh, modern edge. The warm teak was carefully restored, the original details were preserved, and I added that gorgeous dark ribbed detail to the upper shelving for a little contrast and personality.

Behind every finished piece is a little bit of chaos, a lot of dust, and occasionallyโ€ฆ a very opinionated supervisor. ๐Ÿฑ

Sometimes the best part of refinishing isnโ€™t knowing exactly how youโ€™re going to do itโ€ฆ itโ€™s figuring it out. โœจ

This vintage teak cabinet came to me dated, damaged, and ready for a whole new life. My client had a beautiful inspiration photo, and I knew I wanted to recreate that look with half-inch dowels.

The tricky part? Making sure every single dowel lined up perfectly without spending hours trying to piece it together.

So I changed the plan. I removed the back panel, laid it flat, and built the entire design directly on top of it.

And honestly? Those are some of my favourite moments in this workโ€ฆ the ones where you have to stop, rethink it, and find a better way.

Because sometimes the best ideas arenโ€™t the ones you plan, theyโ€™re the ones you figure out along the way. ๐Ÿฉท

Join me for a hands-on weekend workshop where weโ€™ll transform a dated nightstand into a beautiful, modern piece while learning the furniture refinishing process from start to finish.

Whether youโ€™ve never picked up a paintbrush or youโ€™ve refinished a few pieces already, this workshop is designed to give you the knowledge and confidence to tackle your own furniture projects at home.

Over two mornings weโ€™ll cover everything from preparation and sanding to painting, finishing, and more. Youโ€™ll also receive a comprehensive workbook to take home, so youโ€™ll have a step-by-step guide to refer back to long after the workshop is over.

This dining set came to me looking very differentโ€ฆ but my client already had a vision for what she wanted it to become.

She wanted to move away from the dated orange oak and create something richer, warmer and more timeless, with beautiful black chairs to completely transform the look. And I think the finished result proves that sometimes your furniture doesnโ€™t need to be replaced, it just needs a new vision.

Would you have guessed this was the same dining set? ๐Ÿ‘€

One of my favourite techniques for transforming dated oak is using a custom paint wash as a toner. It gives me incredible control over the final colour while still letting the natural beauty of the wood grain shine through.

For this tabletop, I stripped the old finish, sanded it smooth, and used a 1:5 paint wash with Fusion Mineral Paint in Wood Wick before sealing it with a durable topcoat. The base was finished in Benjamin Moore Onyx for a timeless contrast.

Itโ€™s always so satisfying to take a solid wood piece and give it a fresh, modern look while preserving the character that makes it special.

These chairs were incredibly well made, but the orange finish made them feel dated. With the right prep, a quality bonding primer, and a durable paint finish, they now have a completely different look while keeping all of the character and craftsmanship that made them worth saving in the first place.

Furniture doesnโ€™t always need to be replaced. Sometimes, it just needs to be refinished. ๐Ÿ–ค
