Here at our farm, Thanksgiving is a true celebration of the autumn harvests, and no harvest celebration is complete without locally grown flowers. We’re celebrating our final harvests of the season over the next week, and we have the most beautiful locally grown flowers available!

Here’s what you’ll need to know:

We’re offering local delivery Friday and Saturday this weekend.

Our delivery area is as follows:

Batawa, Belleville, Brighton, Carrying Place, Campbellford, Codrington, Colborne, Cobourg, Deseronto, Grafton, Hastings, Havelock, Foxboro, Frankford, Madoc, Marmora, Napanee, Norwood, Port Hope, Prince Edward County, Shannonville, Stirling, Trenton, Tweed, Tyendinaga, Warkworth, Wooler

We will have beautiful mixed fall bouquets available, as well as centrepieces created in fresh pumpkins, and more.

If you would prefer to drop by the farmstand in the week ahead, we would love to see you!

Come with me for a quick little post-frost morning field walk 🥶❄️

We spent 12h yesterday cutting everything that was ready to harvest, and the good news is that our cooler is absolutely bursting with blooms for a busy Thanksgiving weekend ahead!

The unfortunate news is that our dahlia field looks like it will be finished for the year. The leaves of the plants are crunchy, and the buds are all coated in a beautiful layer of ice crystals.

We’ll be able to better assess the damage when the sun is fully up, and we’ll post another update later.

In the meantime, a fun fact about dahlias:

The blooms need to completely open on the plant before they can be harvested for cut flowers. Unlike spring flowers such as tulips —which are best harvested in bud form so that they can open in your home—dahlia buds do not continue to open into fully formed blooms once they are cut from the plant. Dahlias, like many summer flowers (Zinnias are another example), need to open completely on the plant before being harvested and enjoyed in a vase.

If you’re seeing lots of colour in our fields and wondering why we didn’t cut those flowers, it might be helpful to know that they are all of the flowers that were not ripe enough to harvest. Imagine a green banana. If it’s harvested too early, that banana will never properly ripen. Dahlias are similar.

**The one bed of 40 plants of pink Marshmallow Baby dahlias you see in these videos was left to bloom out several weeks ago because it has bugs. We are not wasting flowers ☺️**

More field updates soon, but in the meantime, we’re looking forward to switching gears and beginning to prepare for a busy Thanksgiving weekend!
