Yesterday at the market someone asked me which was my favourite piece of my work—an ever tricky question. I think as an artist you train your eye to appreciate so many different aspects of your work for different reasons… you see the beautiful form in one, the surface finish in another, the function of another… there are many reasons to enjoy any particular piece. For me, I love work which celebrates the natural materials of clay and the earth and which nestles into one hands/home with ease. Yesterday, that piece was this mug celebrating red clay and different surface finishes/colours. Tomorrow, it’ll be another. Keep your eyes, hands, and heart open to those ever-changing moments and feelings.

In my day job at SFU I’m in the third week of a full scale walk-out strike fighting for fair pay and access to a pension after ten years of service. So, for this Friday, I’m raising this mug for surviving and for calculating that my finances can hold a little while longer.

Just four weeks after I COMPLETELY emptied my bank account and moved into my first owned condo (!!!) the strike began. Thanks SFU, that’s a wonderful 10-year work anniversary “gift”. It’s times like this that I’m grateful for clay and the wellness that art self-care can provide. We do what we can, and then we make to escape. Today I went to the studio instead of the picket line.
