Choosing materials for a front walkway is a lot like choosing finishes for a home
You’re balancing colour, texture, and contrast, trying to create something cohesive without making everything too matchy-matchy
This was our second visit to the stone yard. The first time, it felt overwhelming with all the options and the sheer size of the yard. And because the materials are so large and heavy, it was difficult to gather everything together to view it all side by side, the way I normally would when selecting interior finishes
What sounds simple on paper because a lot of walking back and forth between displays, trying to compare tones, textures and scale. It wasn’t working…
After going home to think about it, we decided that for round two we’d bring along a few leftover bricks from our house to guide the colour palette for our new front walkway
Thankfully, the staff let us borrow a few smaller stones from the display wall and an off-cut of the armour stone we were considering, which made it much easier to see everything together
We even tested different polymeric sand colours outside in the natural light. And now we can confidently say we’ve picked the right materials and colours for our home !
Whether you’re selecting fabric, tile, paint, or stone, seeing materials together is where the design decisions become clear
(And yes, it was a surprisingly fun family adventure too!)
