01.01 paring knife

This knife is a little different from the rest. One thing that makes it different is the hammer pattern on the blade made with an aggressive cross peen hammer. I think the more notable thing though is the handle. The wood was obtained from a 100 year old stamp business my friend mr willows acquired. In the back of the shop was a heavy log that the previous generations of owners had used to chop things on. It felt unusually hard and heavy to be local wood. When I got it back from the mill I knew it was something special. This l incredibly dense and oily wood I believe to be Lignum vitae.

One thing you won’t see from my work is the use of exotic hardwoods. This wood is beautiful of course but for a few ethical reasons I choose to dismiss it in favour of the beautiful selection of local Canadian woods I have available to me. All wood I source is either locally milled or reclaimed. I don’t know if I will ever find another block of exotic wood to reclaim so only one handle per batch will be made from this stuff. There are defects in the wood in the fork of heavy checking but this does not bother me. I like to think it tells a story and a touch of wabi sabi a principle I choose to embrace.

Ps the ferrule on this piece is made from buffalo horn sourced as a bi product from farming.

These are a couple of the 55 knives from this first batch. There are two handle designs. On the left is my “standard” handle which is a 6 sided handle with a taper narrowing towards the blade. On the right is my “peak” handle which is also six sided but peaks at the junction of the ferrule and handle.

Sharpening returns to the this Saturday. Find me there for on site immediate sharpening or if you can’t make it you can always drop your knives off at the .market for our drop off service where knives will be returned to you sharp and ready for service the following Friday from when you dropped off the knives.
