This post is about a very unique piece of art, done by Bernadine. The driftwood ( which comes from the island of Bali) is 20 inches long, and 8 inches wide. It has a slit in the centre, which holds a piece of very thick heavy glass. On this she has painted a beautiful beach scene, and to make it much more challenging, the other side has a different painted beach scene.
Painting 2 different scenes on glass is not an easy thing, and the result is a stunning piece of unique art, only here at the Wolseley Gallery. Come in and see it 😍

This post is about art using homemade paper. True paper making began in China around 105 AD. They mixed h**p, bark, old rags and fishing nets with water, mashed them into a pulp, then pressed into thin sheets. Now that’s recycling!!
China kept the technique secret for centuries, but by the 6th and 7th century it was introduced to Korea and Japan. It didn’t reach Europe till the 11th to 13th century, replacing animal skin parchment.
For centuries paper was made using rags and plant fibres, but by the 15th century, the printing press was invented.
By the 19th century, they started using wood pulp, making paper cheap and available for mass production.
Nowadays many artists like to make their own paper, adding things like thread, flower petals, and fibres resulting in very unique and decorative paper.
There are many designer type papers available like mulberry, origami, vellum, albacc, washi and many more.

So besides creating beautiful art on vintage hand saws, 🪚Bernadine also repurposes many other items, including circular saws, and old discarded 78 records.
Circular saws were invented in the late 18th century, and were mainly used in the saw mills, but now they are one of the most used type of saw.
Unlike the circular saw, the old 78 records are a blast from the past. They were popular from the early 1900s until the late 1940s and shaped the foundation of the modern music industry. Made of mainly shellac, these heavy discs spun at about 78 RPMs and could only hold about 3 minutes of music per side. This birthed the standard 3 minute pop song, still popular today.
By the 1960s, the old 78s were obsolete and were left in the dust, to collect dust.

So what is one to do with all of these unwanted items? Well, you give them new life, of course.
Besides just painting on them, Bernadine has turned them into clocks- making them beautiful and practical.

This post is on more of Kelly’s artwork in the Wolseley Gallery. But first a little history lesson on knives🔪
The knife is one of humanity’s oldest tools, dating back to atleast 2.5 million years. The early humans chipped rocks like flint and obsidian to use for hunting.
By 3000 BC, the Bronze Age introduced soft metals which could be shaped but dulled quickly.
By 1200 BC, the Iron Age had harder metals that rusted easily.
By 300 BC the Romans, developed the earliest known folding pocket knive. These featured a iron blade, folding spike, fork, spatula and a toothpick!! Must have been a pretty big knife!!
the 1300’s and 1500’s European companies started making kitchen and utility tools.
In 1913, Harry Beatles invented stainless steel, which stopped the rusting problems and improved manufacturing methods.
Then by the 2000’s with advanced powder metallurgy and modern locking methods, high performance pocket and tactical knives were produced.( Tactical knives are those multi purpose tools used by the military and law enforcement)

This post is about model airplanes ✈️.
The history of model planes spans thousands of years - the oldest known model was found during an excavation of an Egyptian burial ground in 1898. The model was dated back to 200 BC, was 6 inches long and had wings. Hard to imagine they knew about aircraft then, but they did build the pyramids!
In the 1500’s, Leonardo da Vinci sketched detailed designs for flying machines.
By 1871, French pioneer Alphonse Penaud built a rubber powered model airplane with stable dihidral wings. ( I’ll let you look that one up 😳)
By 1903, the Wright brothers achieve powered human flight.
Between the 1920’s and 30’s, after Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight, commercial model kits of balsa wood and tissue paper were available.
In the 1940’s, during World War 2, the military used models for aircraft recognition.
After the 1950’s, plastic model kits were available and easy to access.
Here at the Wolseley Gallery, we have 2 model airplanes, made by Kelly.
These miniature detailed models are handmade and hand painted, one of a kind unique art. A perfect gift for an airplane model collector, or a vintage aviation lover.

Looking for an original unique souvenir of the Canadian prairies, only available here at the Wolseley Gallery.
These two pieces are about 32 inches tall, on pieces of wood. Using homemade air drying clay, there is real prairie wheat embedded in them, along with the impressions of Canadian maple leaves and maple seeds. Hand painted and urethaned. A unique piece of art.
Come in and check them out. We are open every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 to 4. Open other times by appointment.
