“She loved the artwork. Then the bag arrived…” 🌹

I woke up to this lovely review of my Hopefull Handbags tote, and it honestly moved me a little 🥹🌹

This customer has followed my Canal Art for some time, so she already knew she loved the rose design. What surprised her was the quality of the finished bag, the vibrant colours, the substantial feel, and how beautifully the artwork came through on the black fabric.

She wrote that it was “even better when you actually have it in hands.” Hearing that about something I first painted by hand means such a lot. ❤️

I created this limited run of 20 totes to support Hopefull Handbags and the work they do with women who have experienced abuse. Each bag carries a piece of Canal Art, and the profit after production costs goes to the charity.

If you’ve been thinking about getting one, you can see the bag, read why I made it 👇🏽

I’ll put the full Trustpilot review in the first comment. Thank you to the lovely customer who took the time to write it. You’ve made my day. 🌹

A handbag can carry much more than everyday essentials. 💜

For someone rebuilding their life after domestic abuse, it can bring a moment of comfort and dignity. It can say, “Someone is thinking of you. You are not alone.”

That is part of what Hopefull Handbags does. The charity brings people together to support survivors and their children, and its care continues beyond the delivery of a handbag. When immediate crisis support ends, Hopefull Handbags helps survivors take steps towards safety, wellbeing and financial independence.

I wanted my Canal Art to be part of that kindness, so I created a rose design for a tote bag that supports their work. 🌹

If you’d like to know why this project means so much to me, I’ve shared the story 👇🏽

🌹 WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THIS PAINTING? 🌹

At first glance, you might see a colourful arrangement of roses, leaves, buds and daisies.

But this participant has recreated part of a decorative tradition connected to the working families of Britain’s canals.

The art form is known as Roses and Castles, the distinctive folk art once used to decorate working narrowboats and the objects carried aboard them. Roses appeared on cabin doors, panels, water cans, bowls, stools and other practical pieces used in everyday boat life. 🛶

These were not intended to be realistic botanical paintings.

A traditional Canal Art rose is built from carefully placed shapes and confident brushstrokes. Every stroke has a purpose. The petals, highlights, leaves and surrounding flowers work together to create something bold enough to be seen against the dark paintwork of a working boat.

So where did it come from?

The honest answer is that nobody knows its exact beginning.

Canal decoration was being written about by 1858, but historians have never identified one person who painted the first Canal Art rose. Possible influences include painted household wares, decorated trays, pottery, clock faces, furniture and other European folk painting traditions. There have also been suggestions of Romani influence, but no single theory has been conclusively proven.

What we do know is that the tradition developed within the culture of working canal communities during the nineteenth century.

Life aboard a working narrowboat was demanding. Families lived and worked within an extremely small space while carrying cargo through Britain’s industrial landscape. The painted decoration brought colour, identity and pride to boats that were both workplaces and homes.

Different boatyards and painters developed recognisable ways of painting. Places including Braunston, Polesworth and Leighton Buzzard became associated with their own variations. The basic visual language was shared, but an experienced eye could often recognise the hand or region behind the brush. 🎨

As commercial carrying declined during the twentieth century, the working culture that created Roses and Castles also began to disappear. The tradition survived because painters, boating families, museums, restorers and teachers continued to study it and pass it on.

That is what makes this workshop painting so interesting.

This participant was not simply copying a pretty flower. She was learning brush movements, shapes and conventions passed from painter to painter across generations.

Her finished canvas is new, but the visual language behind it is more than 150 years old.

Every person who takes the time to learn this craft becomes another link in its story.

That is how we got from roses painted on working narrowboats to this proud moment in a Colchester workshop. 🌹💚

Would you have guessed that one small bouquet carried so much British social and industrial history?

I’ve been busy behind the scenes today creating a dedicated page for my Hopefull Handbags project 🌹👜

I wanted somewhere I could properly tell the story behind the tote, explain a little more about the work Hopefull Handbags do, and share why this project matters to me beyond simply creating and selling a bag.

There’s also a lovely bit about the collaboration behind it, because this really has become a small example of women in business supporting women. 💖

If you’d like to have a little look at what I’ve been creating, you can read the full story below:

More little updates will be coming throughout September, but I’m really pleased to finally have one place where the whole story lives. 🌹✨
