Am Samstag öffnet die Biennale Images Vevey ihre Tore – und mit dabei sind Werke aus Barbara Davatz’ Langzeitserie „as time goes by”.

Das Laboratorium begleitet, druckt und berät Barbara Davatz nun schon seit fast 20 Jahren auf ihrem künstlerischen Weg. Umso schöner, ihre Arbeiten jetzt in Vevey zu sehen.

In einem Tag lernst du das 1842 entwickelte fotografische Druckverfahren kennen. Im Workshop zeigen wir dir den gesamten Prozess: vom Ansetzen der Lösung über das Belichten bis zum Entwickeln deiner eigenen Arbeiten.

Gearbeitet wird in kleiner Gruppe – Vorkenntnisse brauchst du keine.

At the Laboratory Zürich, we are also specialised in the production of silver gelatine prints, combining traditional darkroom craftsmanship with decades of experience.
Enlargements on silver gelatine paper are characterized by a wide tonal range, a silky shimmering surface and a long shelf life.

Silver gelatine paper, also known as baryta paper, consists of a cotton base, a layer of barium sulphate and the light-sensitive silver gelatine layer. The barium sulphate or baryta layer stops the photographic layer from sinking into the surface of the base paper.

In contrast to the digitally exposed baryta print, we work with an analog enlarger in the darkroom. Each print is exposed individually, so each image has its own optimum exposure time. Areas that are too light can be re-exposed, areas that are too dark can be dodged – in this sense, «analog image processing» is always part of the image statement. The exposed paper is developed, soaked, air-dried and pressed and then retouched by hand with a brush.

As this process is time-consuming, it is used less and less today. However, museums, galleries, art lovers and artists still greatly appreciate hand prints made on silver gelatine paper. This process is and remains one of the most beautiful black and white photographic techniques.

The platinum-palladium process is a unique photographic printing process and a signature of the laboratory.

Platinum-palladium prints are characterized by a very wide tonal range and a velvety, iridescent surface. No other process produces such fine shades of gray and deep blacks with unparalleled definition in shadows and highlights on paper.

Only a few still master this technique, which has its origins in the 19th century. Photographers such as Paul Strand, Irving Penn and Alfred Stieglitz used the technique as a form of artistic expression. Due to high raw material prices, this process fell into oblivion and it was not until the 1970s that it experienced a renaissance in the USA and Europe.

The Laboratorium has endeavored to keep the process alive for over 20 years and is proud to be one of the few photo labs still offering the platinum-palladium process today.

We create a digital negative in the desired image size from the original negative. The light-sensitive solution, consisting of platinum, palladium and iron salts, is mixed in our laboratory from elaborately prepared pure and precious raw materials and skillfully applied by hand with a brush to high-quality watercolour paper. The coated paper is dried and then exposed to UV light using a contact process. The exposed paper is then developed, clarified, watered and air-dried. This creates works of art that are also unique.

Für die neue Ausstellung «Schattenwesen – Von der Geisterfotografie zu den Phantomen des Algorithmus» im Fotomuseum Winterthur Winterthur durften wir die Inkjet-Fineart-Prints produzieren.

Die Ausstellung spannt den Bogen von der historischen Geisterfotografie zu den algorithmischen Phantomen der Gegenwart – mit Arbeiten u.a. von Trevor Paglen, Shannon Taggart, Nina Davies,Sung Chi-Li, Agate Tūna und Cihad Caner.

Wir danken für das Vertrauen

Die Ausstellung läuft noch bis am 11. Oktober – ein Besuch lohnt sich.
