Good interior design is often defined by the things you barely notice. Until they are wrong.

A dining chair that cannot be pulled out comfortably. A kitchen island that interrupts circulation. A bedside table squeezed into a narrow gap. None of these problems necessarily show up in a beautiful render, but each affects how a space works once it is lived in.

This is why precise space planning matters. Furniture dimensions, walking clearances, kitchen layouts and the distance between individual pieces must be considered together, from the earliest stages of the floor plan. These decisions are far easier to get right on paper than to correct once the interior is built.

There is no universal formula for every room. The right dimensions depend on the furniture, the layout and how people use the space. What matters is understanding how each measurement affects comfort, movement and proportion.

The most successful interiors make functionality look effortless. That effect is rarely accidental.

The Luxury of Less. Part 2.

True minimalism is not simply about having less. It is about planning more carefully.

These before and after images show what happens when every detail is considered at the planning stage. The difference is not just a cleaner appearance. It is the result of designing the space around all the things that have to be there, while making sure they do not become the things you notice first.

Electrical connections, cables, ventilation, lighting, drainage, storage and other technical elements are essential to a comfortable modern home. But they do not have to interrupt the architecture. When they are integrated into the layout from the beginning, they can disappear behind built in furniture, within walls or ceilings, and into carefully designed details.

That is where the real luxury of minimalism lies.

Clean lines, elegant proportions, refined materials and uninterrupted surfaces are not achieved by simply removing objects at the end of a project. They come from architectural planning, space planning and interior architecture working together from the very beginning.

The goal is not to choose between aesthetics and functionality. A well designed luxury interior should give you both: the visual calm of a minimalist interior and all the comfort of modern living.

Because when every detail has been thought through, technology can work quietly in the background, while the architecture gets to speak for itself.

At Villa Volt in St. Moritz, the landscape becomes part of the interior.

For this alpine residence, Zalaba Design developed an interior concept shaped by its surroundings, combining generous glazing, warm timber, natural stone, and a restrained palette of soft neutral tones.

The open kitchen and living areas are oriented towards the mountains and surrounding trees, with carefully framed views becoming an integral part of the everyday experience. Timber surfaces and architectural details bring warmth and continuity, while contemporary furniture and clean lines keep the interiors light and refined.

More intimate spaces introduce deeper tones, textured surfaces, vertical timber elements, and atmospheric lighting. The wellness area combines wood, stone, and water to create a private retreat within the home.

Villa Volt in St. Moritz by Zalaba Design.

For this contemporary alpine residence, the surrounding landscape became an essential part of the interior concept. Generous glazing frames views of the mountains and trees, while warm timber, natural stone, and soft neutral tones create a refined and welcoming atmosphere.

The open kitchen and living spaces are designed around the views, creating a direct relationship between the interior and its alpine setting. In the more private areas of the villa, deeper materials, textured surfaces, vertical timber elements, and carefully considered lighting introduce a more intimate atmosphere.

The wellness area brings together wood, stone, and water to create a secluded retreat within the home.

The result is a residence that feels deeply connected to St. Moritz while maintaining a contemporary and understated character.

A cat-friendly home does not have to look like a cat playground.

The best pet-friendly interiors are designed around how cats actually use space: climbing, observing, hiding, scratching and finding a quiet place to retreat. Vertical territory is especially important, which is why built-in shelves, wall-mounted platforms, window perches and custom niches can be much more than decorative details.

A good interior can make room for all of this without sacrificing its aesthetic. A hidden cat bed becomes part of the joinery. A scratching post becomes a sculptural element. A cabinet can include a discreet passage, while shelving creates a whole vertical route through the room.

The key is to design for the cat from the beginning rather than adding pet furniture afterwards. When feline enrichment is integrated into the architecture, the result can be better for the cat and more interesting for the interior.

Because apparently, the client with the most specific requirements in the house may have four legs.
