BEYOND PROJECTS AND FLOORPLANS: A DIFFERENT KIND OF INTERVIEW.

Some interviews go beyond projects and business strategies. They reveal the habits, stories, and experiences that shape the people behind them.

Our founder and senior partner Daniel Schneider recently answered the “Nahaufnahme” questionnaire by Claudia Tödtmann for the management blog of WirtschaftsWoche Germany’s leading business magazine.

In the interview, Daniel shares personal insights on hospitality, leadership, family rituals, difficult moments, and why he still avoids stepping on pavement joints to this day.

The conversation reflects something that has shaped Monoplan from the very beginning: hospitality is always about people. About passion, resilience, curiosity, and the ambition to create places that last.

From thoughts on the future of hospitality to stories from the early days, the interview offers a more personal perspective on the mindset behind Monoplan.

A STAY DESIGNED AROUND FLOW AND FREEDOM

In Interlaken, HOP Apartments & Suites rethinks what modern hospitality can feel like. Set between mountains and the Aare river, the project brings together nature, design, and technology in a calm and easy way.

Interior designer Sara Rois describes the idea like this: “The concept follows the idea of “from mountain to water.” Soft lines, natural materials, and a relaxed color palette create a quiet connection to the landscape outside. At the same time, small, playful details add character and make the space feel approachable rather than formal.”

Monoplan developed the architecture, interior design, and branding as one consistent story. This means the experience goes beyond the physical space, extending into how guests move through and interact with the hotel.

The apartments are designed for flexibility and independence. Digital access replaces traditional keys, and shared areas offer snacks, coffee, and everything needed throughout the day. Each unit provides a private and comfortable setting, with its own kitchen, bathroom, and outdoor space.

HOP is not about classic hotel routines. It is about staying in a place that feels simple, intuitive, and connected to its surroundings.

FINDING BEAUTY IN THE PROCESS

On site in New York City, it is often the smallest moments that stand out the most. A joint, a surface, a pattern in the making. These details, sometimes raw and imperfect, reveal the true character of a building before it is finished.

Patterns in architecture are not always planned as decorative elements. They emerge through repetition, construction, and craftsmanship. Lines of structure, rhythms of materials, and traces of the process itself begin to tell a story. There is a quiet beauty in these moments, especially in what is not yet polished.

Our current project in New York brings this idea into focus. Looking closely at the construction process, we see how texture, layering, and imperfection can become part of the design language. It is a reminder that architecture is not only about the final image, but about everything that leads up to it.

Sometimes, the unfinished holds just as much beauty as the completed space.

TIMELESS ELEGANCE IN THE HEART OF ZURICH

At the Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich, the rooms reflect a careful balance between historic character and contemporary comfort. Located at Paradeplatz, this landmark building was thoughtfully transformed from the former Savoy Baur en Ville into a refined five star hotel experience.

As architects, we were proud to be part of this transformation, helping shape spaces that feel calm, elegant, and connected to the city. The rooms combine classic proportions with modern details, offering a quiet retreat in the middle of vibrant Zurich.

Natural light, soft materials, and carefully selected finishes create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, while subtle design elements reflect the heritage of the building. Each room was designed to offer both comfort and a sense of place, just steps away from landmarks such as Fraumünster, Grossmünster, and Lake Zurich.

What do you value most in a hotel room when staying in the city?

MONO INSIGHTS. PHILIP WOHLFARTH.

JUST OPENED IN CRETE

High above the Bay of Elounda, INNSiDE Elounda by Meliá has just opened its doors, offering wide views across the sea and a calm, modern retreat shaped by its surroundings.

Designed by Monoplan, the project was developed from the first concept through to ex*****on. Monoplan’s scope covered all planning phases in architecture and interior design, accompanying Zeus Hotels throughout the entire development process.

The arrival sets the tone right away. A relaxed lobby and bar create an easy place to settle in, whether for a quiet moment or a drink at sunset. The experience continues throughout the hotel. Guests can enjoy Mediterranean dishes, spend time by the infinity pool, join yoga sessions by the water, or stay active in the open air InFit gym. Creative spaces add another layer, making the stay feel both relaxed and inspiring.

It is a place designed to slow down and take in the view.

Would this be your kind of escape?

DANIEL SCHNEIDER revealing the secrets of architects!

We are proud that our founder and partner, Daniel Schneider, recently shared his insights in an interview with Maren Boettcher from CHOSEN by Architects for their “Architects Secrets” section.

In the conversation, Daniel talks about a variety of important topics, including current projects and the changing landscape of hospitality. He touches on how the industry is evolving, how we approach design today, and why these shifts matter.

One key point Daniel brings up is the growing diversity in the hospitality sector. Expectations and definitions of luxury are becoming more varied, from the classic grandeur of traditional hotels to the simplicity of minimalist concepts.

At Monoplan, we’ve always believed that architecture isn’t just about the design itself. It's about the whole picture - architecture, branding, functionality, and economic feasibility need to work together. If the foundation isn’t right, even the best design won’t succeed.

Daniel also discusses how we’re looking beyond the usual hospitality framework. He talks about the idea of applying principles from hospitality to other sectors, like healthcare architecture, to create spaces that truly make a difference for the people who use them.

A VIEW THAT DEFINES THE SPACE

At The Europe Hotel & Resort , the Signature Suites were designed by Monoplan with one clear idea in mind: to let the landscape lead. Surrounded by the lakes and mountains of Killarney, the suites offer a calm and refined setting that feels closely connected to nature.

The interiors focus on simplicity and quality. Warm colors, natural materials, and soft surfaces create a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere without taking attention away from the view. Large openings bring in daylight and frame the scenery, making it a natural part of the experience.

The spaces are designed to feel open and balanced. Light, texture, and layout work together to create a place where guests can slow down and feel at ease.

A big thank you to the Killarney Hotels Collection and GDC Interiors for the collaboration, and to everyone involved in making this project possible.

Would this be your ideal place to unwind?
