BIG SKY — FOUR WAYS OF LOOKING AT THE MOUNTAIN
My first time in Big Sky made me think about the mountain differently.
Not only as a landscape, but as a place where nature, culture, aesthetics and design meet.
Aesthetics.
Kircliff made me think about the way we stage the mountain today. Like the “step into the void” at the Aiguille du Midi, it transforms the landscape into an experience — almost into an image — and plays with our desire to get closer to the spectacular.
Nature.
At One&Only Moonlight Basin, the relationship with the landscape is part of the experience itself. The mountain is not simply the backdrop: it becomes part of the way the place is imagined and inhabited.
Culture.
At Lone Mountain Ranch, the rodeo and the cowboy culture reminded me that a mountain destination is also a territory with its own history, rituals and mythology. Something quite different from the Alps, but perhaps sharing the same need to tell a story about the land.
Design.
And then there was Mono. A mountain shoe, but one in which function doesn’t erase aesthetics. What caught my eye was its silhouette: the proportions, the finesse, the finishing. A technical object that manages to remain elegant.
Four very different encounters.
But perhaps this is what I am looking for when I discover something in the mountains:
the way it expresses a relationship with its landscape, its culture, its aesthetics or its way of life.
Born in Zermatt. Discovering mountains everywhere.
