In Restrepo, in the Department of Meta in Colombia, I had the opportunity to photograph an immature Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio martinica). This colorful waterbird is found in wetlands across the Americas, and seeing it at this stage of life offers a glimpse into the transformation from juvenile into the fully radiant adult. Even before maturity, its iridescent feathers shimmer with green, blue, and golden tones, and its long yellow legs with broad toes give it an almost whimsical appearance.
The moment I captured this image was filled with quiet intensity. The bird moved with surprising agility across dense foliage and fallen leaves, perfectly balanced on toes that seem oversized at first glance but are engineered to keep it steady on floating plants. The dim light filtering through the canopy made photographing challenging. I had to work with higher ISO and steady my position while waiting for the bird to pause, holding its posture long enough to bring every detail into focus.
As a photographer dedicated to conservation, I find these moments meaningful because they connect artistry with ecological awareness. Wetlands like those in Meta are critical habitats, supporting not only Purple Gallinules but countless other species that rely on these ecosystems. Each frame I create is not just an image for display but a message about resilience, beauty, and the importance of protecting our natural world.
I invite you to see beyond the surface of this photograph. It is not only about feathers and form but also about a story of adaptation and survival. These are the stories I hope to share with the world, using photography as a bridge between people and the landscapes that sustain life.
