Together with the club’s president , we asked:
What if a tennis club wasn’t just a club — but an extension of your home?
A place where you come to be — to work, to watch, to meet friends, and yes, to refill your bottle with cold and sparkling water.
No bottled water required.
No design ego either. Just a Quooker, a sink, and a better idea about what hospitality could mean.

The bigger question is:
Why do we still design public spaces like they’re frozen in time?
Why are “amenities” something you pay extra for in a hotel room?
What if architecture wasn’t about what’s included — but what it gives back?

Imagine every space as a service.
Imagine every project thinking beyond the brief.
Imagine never needing a plastic bottle again.

Affordable Housing? Let’s Be Honest: It’s Not Just About Building More, It’s About Rethinking How We Live.

Rents are rising.
Materials are more expensive.
Energy costs are up.
Labor is costly (and rightly so).
Demand for housing is booming, but supply just isn’t keeping up.

Let’s face it: the future of affordable housing means smaller private spaces.
And if private spaces shrink, we need more and better Third Spaces—places that fill the gap.

But here’s the thing:
Not every Third Space is the same.
Some people need a coffee-fueled dancefloor at 11 AM.
Others need a quiet, reflective space to pause, recharge, and feel connected to something calm.

That’s what we created with this Matcha Café design:
A space where you sip something green and healthy, where the air feels natural, where materials are warm and minimal.
A place that resists the noise, where wellness is in the details—natural textures, soft acoustics, the gentle ritual of tea.

It’s not just a café.
It’s a design for the pause.
A third space that says:
You don’t have to be on all the time.

Because if we’re going to build smaller homes, we need bigger ideas for the spaces in between.

📏💻 Analog vs. Digital: The Blueprint Battle

🤖 AI is revolutionizing architecture—floorplans appear instantly, and generative AI makes traditional renderings look medieval. What’s next for our profession?

🐢 Argument A: The Tortoise Approach
Architects aren’t exactly known for rapid tech adoption. BIM (Building Information Modeling) was developed back in the 1970s, yet some offices still resist using it. BIM provides a comprehensive, intelligent 3D model that helps improve collaboration, reduce errors, optimize cost estimation, and streamline project timelines—so why isn’t it everywhere yet? Is it cautious skepticism or simply architectural stubbornness?

🎨 Argument B: The Scale Conundrum
Yes, digital is flexible—but have you ever tried fully grasping scale by zooming endlessly on a screen? There’s still something unmatched about sketching over a printed, to-scale plan. Even digital sketching via Zoom, which makes collaboration easier, can’t fully replace the tangible experience of standing around physical blueprints and scribbling ideas together.

Behind the Scenes of Sustainability 🏗️💡

Going CO₂-neutral isn’t as simple as swapping fossil fuels for solar panels—it requires some clever behind-the-scenes engineering.

Here’s the energy hub we designed in Caputh, powering an entire urban district through an advanced local heating network. It connects multiple combined heat-and-power units (CHP) with an innovative ice storage system and a large heat pump.

Yes, ice is keeping homes warm—sounds weird, right? 🧊🔥

Here’s how it works:
• Ice storage is essentially a massive underground water tank. As water freezes, it releases energy (known as crystallization heat). A heat exchanger captures this energy, and the connected heat pump boosts it to a usable temperature for heating buildings.
• During warmer months, the ice storage flips its role and provides natural cooling. Buildings get chilled without additional energy-intensive equipment—a perfect seasonal energy cycle.

Why is ice storage so smart?
✅ Grid Stability: Renewable energy isn’t always predictable—sometimes the sun doesn’t shine, and the wind doesn’t blow. Ice storage buffers these fluctuations by storing thermal energy when renewable sources are plentiful, then releasing it when needed.
✅ Low-Tech Reliability: At the heart of this system is simple physics—just freezing and thawing water. It’s straightforward, cost-effective, and extremely reliable compared to more complex chemical or battery systems.
✅ Year-Round Efficiency: Dual-purpose capability provides heating in winter and cooling in summer, dramatically increasing efficiency and occupant comfort without adding complex machinery or significantly higher energy bills.

Going green isn’t just about installing solar panels—it’s about designing entire energy ecosystems that work reliably and sustainably, all year round. Infrastructure like this usually stays hidden underground or behind closed doors, but it’s crucial in turning CO₂-neutral visions into reality.

The Future of Cities is Built Together 🏙️🚀

Germany needs more housing—urgently. But instead of 400,000 new homes, we got a masterclass in slow-motion bureaucracy. The problem? Not a lack of builders, land, or demand. Just a system that’s stuck buffering.

Standing here with chancellor , Nathalie von Siemens and a group of experts, one thing is clear: we don’t need more panel discussions—we need actual decisions. The industry is ready to build, the demand is there. So, what’s missing?

What happens when architecture gets a sense of humor? 😏🏗️

The best designs don’t take themselves too seriously—and neither do the best cities. That’s why we created Utsutsu, a pop-up that plays with perception, illusion, and the joy of the unexpected.

🔹 The bench looks like it’s floating (it’s not, but let’s keep the magic alive).
🔹 The curtain feels like a magician’s reveal (no rabbits, just good food and clever design).
🔹 The mirror isn’t a window, but it kind of works like one—framing a different perspective of the city.
🔹 The entire space is temporary, because sometimes, the best experiences don’t last forever.

But Utsutsu isn’t just about tricks and illusions—it’s a restaurant concept that blends Japanese simplicity with Düsseldorf’s vibrant food culture. The kitchen is all about contrasts—raw and cooked, traditional and modern, playful yet precise. It’s comfort food for the curious, paired with natural wines and craft drinks that match the experience. Because food, like design, is about creating moments.

Why do pop-ups matter?

✔ For future restaurant, café, and bar owners, pop-ups are an ideal testing ground. Before investing in a full-scale location, chefs can experiment with menus, gauge the market, and refine their concept without massive upfront costs. It’s high-impact, low-risk entrepreneurship—perfect for a city like Düsseldorf, where new ideas need space to evolve.

✔ For cities, pop-ups activate underused spaces. Instead of empty storefronts or forgotten corners, temporary installations bring energy, life, and new interactions. A pop-up can turn an overlooked area into a destination—and when done well, it can influence long-term urban planning.

✔ For people, pop-ups tap into FOMO (fear of missing out). When something is limited-time-only, it instantly becomes more desirable. Whether it’s a pop-up restaurant, an art installation, or a temporary urban intervention, the knowledge that it will disappear soon makes people more eager to experience it. And in cities, this sense of urgency keeps the energy dynamic and ever-evolving.

Small Space, Big Impact – The Art of Everyday Luxury 🛁✨

Let’s be honest—row houses don’t exactly scream spa-like luxury. But who says you can’t have both? This bathroom proves that smart design can make even compact spaces feel high-end. And no, you don’t need gold-plated faucets or a bathtub the size of a swimming pool to achieve it.

So what actually makes a small space feel bigger and more luxurious? It’s not about stuffing a room with expensive materials, but about creating openness, flow, and comfort. Here’s what works:

✔ Freestanding bathtub – A sculptural bathtub like this acts as a statement piece and instantly elevates the room. It also makes the space feel more open than a built-in tub squeezed into a corner. Plus, let’s be real—it just looks cooler.

✔ Floating vanity – The more floor space you see, the larger the room feels. A floating sink keeps things airy, removes visual clutter, and avoids that boxy feeling that makes small bathrooms seem even smaller.

✔ Smart separation, no doors needed – The partition wall doesn’t go all the way to the ceiling, which keeps the space feeling open while still creating a sense of privacy. The indirect light at the top gives a soft, warm glow, making the room feel even more spacious.

✔ Hidden WC for parallel use – The toilet is tucked away so the space can be used by two people at the same time—without awkward door handling. Functional design at its best!

✔ Dark tones & soft lighting – You might think dark bathrooms feel small, but paired with indirect lighting, they create a cozy, intimate vibe that feels high-end. Think boutique hotel, not basement dungeon.

✔ Zoned layout – Instead of cramming everything together, the bathtub, shower, and sink each have their own space. This improves flow and function, making the room feel intentional rather than squeezed.

At the end of the day, luxury isn’t about square meters—it’s about how a space makes you feel. If you can step into your bathroom and instantly feel relaxed, that’s the real definition of high-end design.

📐 Corners Matter!

Corners in architecture are like punctuation in a sentence—ignore them, and everything feels unfinished. A well-designed architectural corner defines a building’s character, depth, and light play. 🌞⬛

Too often, architects treat corners as an afterthought, but they shape urban design, building identity, and even user experience. Think of the Flatiron Building in NYC—would it be iconic without its sharp, wedge-like presence?

From classical decorative quoins to Art Deco chamfered edges and modern minimalist voids, building design has always given corners special treatment. The best designs make sharp, clean details a signature feature.

Not your typical Monday meeting… 🏗️💼 It was an absolute pleasure to sit down with Chancellor Olaf Scholz in such a private and open setting—no press, no scripted speeches, just an honest discussion about the struggles of the building industry and how we can finally get Germany back on track to create enough housing.

The big question: Why is building in Germany so painfully slow and expensive? Scholz had an interesting take—he argues that it’s not just politics causing delays but also the construction industry itself, which keeps adding more and more DIN norms, technical regulations, and self-imposed complexity that slow everything down and drive up costs. And while there’s some truth to that, let’s not ignore the elephant in the room: the approval process.

Right now, the biggest bottleneck (Nadelöhr) is not engineers overcomplicating things, but bureaucracy dragging projects into an endless loop of paperwork, approvals, and political inertia. It’s no secret that Genehmigungsverfahren (permit processes) in Germany take way too long, often years instead of months, leaving much-needed housing projects stuck in limbo.

One thing is clear—we need a shift. Less red tape, more digital processes, faster decision-making, and a culture that actually encourages building instead of putting obstacles in the way.

Also, side note: we’re pretty proud of this co-working space in Caputh where this discussion took place—because yes, we designed it! 😉🏡

Neue Mitte Caputh: Redefining Community Living and Sustainability

The first two multi-storey, mixed-use buildings in our Caputh project are officially complete—and even before we finished paving the streets in front, every micro-apartment had already been rented out. This milestone reflects the growing demand for smart, urban living concepts that blend residential and shared community spaces.

When we were in the design phase, optimizing floor plans, the city initially pushed back, suggesting there was no need for smaller apartments and advocating instead for larger units over 100 sqm. But we had a different vision. We aimed to incorporate urban sharing economy ideas, dedicating the ground floor and basement to co-working spaces, complete with extras like a mini-cinema, gym, and more. The idea was simple but ambitious: offer residents the option of a flexible desk membership at an affordable rate, making smaller apartments more attractive and practical.

Did you know? Urban developments that emphasize shared spaces not only foster a sense of community but also encourage sustainable living by reducing individual space requirements. Implementing this approach was no small feat, as we navigated strict federal and local regulations around accessible design, parking, and more. But the results speak for themselves: the buildings are fully rented, proving that creative, high-quality solutions win in the end.

In the end, having an architect who thinks beyond conventional layouts and brings new, adaptable ideas can make all the difference. It pays off—not just in rental success, but in the quality and vibrancy of the neighborhood. And yes, it takes patience and persistence, but that’s what makes moments like this all the more rewarding.
