Today’s Art Note: Why gallery openings still matter.

You can discover thousands of artworks online without ever entering a gallery. So why do openings still matter?
Because art is only part of what happens there. Openings bring artists, collectors, curators, friends and people who are simply curious into the same space. They create conversations that cannot really be planned.

For emerging artists, these evenings can mean meeting someone who remembers their work months later. For visitors, they offer a way into an art world that can otherwise feel closed or intimidating. You do not need to know the artist, understand every work or arrive ready to buy something. Sometimes showing up is enough.

Art brings people into the room. What happens between them keeps the room alive.

Matching a work to your room can help you imagine it there. But it is only one part of the decision.

Before buying, try looking at the work on its own. What drew you to it in the first place? Do you want to see it again after you close the page? Your furniture and wall colour may change over time. The interest you feel in a work is a better reason to make space for it.

I find it hard to look away from this painting. A bright green eye sits among dark, twisting forms, while the pink and red around it make its gaze feel almost human. The acrylic brushstrokes give everything a restless energy, as if the eye has just turned to meet yours.

Information about the artist, material or idea can help you see more. It should support your own reaction, not tell you what to think. Art becomes more accessible when curiosity matters more than expertise.

Today’s Art Note: Why emerging artists leave galleries.

Most artists do not walk away after one disappointing exhibition. They leave when uncertainty becomes the normal state of the relationship.

A gallery partnership depends on communication and clear expectations. Artists need to understand how their work will be presented, how often they can expect updates and what both sides are working toward. Galleries also need artists who communicate openly, meet commitments and understand that building a market takes time.

Problems begin when representation exists only on paper. If there is no feedback, no strategy and no conversation about future opportunities, artists can feel invisible within the gallery roster. Sales matter, but so do introductions, thoughtful placement and consistent support.

Clear communication cannot guarantee success. It can prevent a promising partnership from quietly falling apart.
