A Pair of Chinese Archaistic Nephrite 'Ancestor' or Shamanic Figures

Each figure is carved from polished nephrite in a celadon hue with russet inclusions.
The figures are depicted seated, with their hands resting symmetrically just below the beltline, evoking a sense of reverence or ceremonial significance. The almond-shaped eyes, stylized noses, and slightly open mouths lend the faces a serene yet archaistic quality, complemented by bianzi (braided pigtails), flowing down from their headdresses adorned with ribbon-like ornaments. The cascading robes extend downward, with the legs and sides of the garments intricately carved to form the integral, deeply incised bases.

A large Sino-Tibetan cold-gilded bronze group of Palden Lhamo, 20th century

A fine bronze depicting Palden Lhamo, the only female Dharmapala in Tibetan Buddhism, in a dynamic pose riding on her mythical mule Kyang Go Karkar ("pure white mule"). As the wrathful protector of the Dharma and protective deity of the line of the Dalai Lamas, she is surrounded by a finely pierced halo of flames (jvalamala),
which underlines her transcendent power and spiritual energy.
The figure impresses with its wide-open third eye, symbol of omniscience, and its high,
flowing hair, set in deep red. Her upper body is adorned with detailed garlands,
necklaces (kanthika) and an ornate waist belt (mekhala).
The mule, depicted in dynamic movement with its front leg outstretched, gallops over a stylized river of blood, while its decorations such as reins and ornaments emphasize the complexity of the depiction. On either side are her wrathful companions, Makaramukha (crocodile face) and Simhamukha (lion face), who represent protection and the overcoming of obstacles. The elaborately curved flame aureole shows rhythmically arranged tongues of flame, symbolizing the purifying fire of wisdom. The rectangular base, with engraved mountain landscapes, refers to the sacred topographies of Tibet.

The figure is adorned with gemstones, including genuine rubies and turquoise.
The attributes of all the figures are made of silver, and some, like the bell around the mule's neck, are movable.

possibly inspired by the episode of Muchalinda, the Naga King,
who protected the Buddha during his meditation from a storm.
At the center stands the Buddha, dressed in a simple orange robe and surrounded by a radiant flame mandorla. Standing on a lotus blossom, he exudes tranquility and sovereignty. His raised hand is in the Abhaya Mudra, while the other hand rests gently by his side. Beside him coils the scaly figure of the Naga Muchalinda, whose distinctive head rises protectively close to the Buddha. A Deva, a celestial being, hovers to the right of the Buddha in an attitude of reverence. The Deva’s intricately designed attire and glowing blue aureole emphasize its exalted, divine nature. In the lower section, a festive scene unfolds: two dancers in lavish garments move gracefully, accompanied by a group of musicians playing traditional Thai instruments such as the Phin (lute) and Ching (hand cymbals). Concluding the composition is a group of worldly spectators, dressed in colorful robes and adopting reverent postures, symbolizing their respect and admiration for the spiritual dimension of the scene. Below them, a pond is depicted, featuring a large turtle surrounded by four smaller turtles. Among the turtles swim fish with distinctive forms and red scales.
