Has she just come from dancing? Or is she planning to go dancing later?
Gabriele Münter’s Stenographer personifies the Garçonne – the modern woman of the 1920s and 1930s. She is elegant and stylish, with a wavy bob and, above all, fashion-conscious. To be independent, she works in one of the new professions that emerged for women at the time. Casually, she has pulled her sweater over her pyjamas to get to work.
A few years ago, we framed Gabriele Münter’s „Dame im Sessel, schreibend (Stenographie. Schweizerin in Pyjama)“, 1929, in a historic frame dating from the period in which the painting was created. The softwood frame with a beaded ogee profile is finished in silver bronze and forms a harmonious unity with the painting.
Münter’s work is currently on view in the exhibition “A LONG-DISTANCE CALL: SCENES FROM THE WEIMAR REPUBLIC” . The exhibition runs only until this Sunday, September 27 – so make sure to visit if you haven’t seen the show yet!
