We had a great research day at the Estonian National Museum yesterday. Namely, a long training about the Seto traditional clothes is about to start again soon, during which we will also gather new patterns for different clothing pieces. This session was about traditional pick-up woven belts collected from Seto area, ESTONIA.

During our Handicraft Tour in August 2027 we will be learning many other different handicraft techniques, which are very special to this remote area: embroidery, tablet weaving, crocheting, bottle neck belt making and doll making.
During the Fabric and Belt Waving Craft Tour in the end of August 2027 you have an opportunity to learn Estonian pick-up weaving technique from a great weaving master and book author Piia Rand.

During our Handicraft Tour in August 2027 we will be learning many different handicraft techniques, which are very special to this remote area.
Traditional Seto clothing is an important expression of the cultural identity and heritage of the Seto people, who live in south-eastern Estonia. Traditionally, women wore long white linen shirts, distinctive dark sarafan-like dresses, aprons and woven belts, with details varying according to the period and locality.

The head covering is very distinctive and meaningful part of traditional Seto women's clothing. It is especially interesting because it was not simply a decorative accessory, but also a marker of a woman's marital status and stage of life.

Another remarkable feature of Seto women's dress is the impressive silver jewellery worn on the chest, particularly the large silver breast ornament known as a sõlg. These ornaments were often passed down through generations and represented family wealth, status and cultural belonging.
I visited Obinitsa Museum today for a very interesting workshop on Seto woman's head band. It is used to secure the linen head covering, the linik, and is also an important decorative element. The headband helps hold the covering in place over the carefully arranged braids, creating the characteristic shape of the married woman's headdress.
Seto headband is made using finger-weaving, or finger-braiding, rather than ordinary loom weaving. It is a remarkably sophisticated traditional textile technique. It uses a twill-patterned braiding technique with a very large number of threads — on average, more than 80. As a prctice run today, we used 53 threads.

The threads are manipulated by hand in a carefully controlled sequence, creating a dense, even band with beautifully symmetrical diamond patterns.

During our new handicraft tour to Valga County we will be visiting many different craft artist studios. One of the weaving masters is Jana Saar in Otepää, who I visited today to admire her absolutely top level craft. She is a graduate of the Viljandi Culture Academy Textiles department and a famous master of traditional clothes.
It is hard to say on what she is specializing, as she is making traditional Estonian clothes and that includes weaving skirt fabrics, sewing, embroidering and crocheting. Her Weaving Studio is enormous and she fills that with so much activity that you become overwhelmed. Great experience!
I am cordially inviting craft loving people to Estonia next summer. We will start in April 2027 touring Romania, in June we learn to knit in Latvian style enjoying luxury lifestyle in Latvian Manor Houses. The rest of the summer is for Estonian crafts and marvelous places in Estonia: Haapsalu, the islands, Pärnu and much more.

In December 2026 there will be a mitten exhibition in Tallinn at the Folk Art Gallery at P**k 22 by Nordic Knitters/Estonian Mittens.
For the show, I would like to connect the ancient knowledge preserved in traditional mitten patterns and motifs with the realities of modern life. While looking for a thread that could link these two worlds, I discovered 'kaapotkleit' — a garment that itself represents a meeting point between tradition and changing fashion. The name comes from the French word 'capote', meaning a loose garment or hooded coat. Kaapotkleit offers an interesting bridge between Estonia’s traditional textile heritage and the evolution of clothing into the modern age.

Kaapotkleit became popular in the second half of the 19th century, particularly in northern and western Estonia. Unlike the older traditional clothes, kaapotkleit reflects the influence of changing European fashion. Its cut was inspired by contemporary Biedermeier and later 19th-century clothing, with a fitted bodice, long sleeves and a full, gathered skirt.

Estonian women adapted this fashionable style to local traditions, often making the dresses from home-woven woollen or linen or half-woollen fabrics. Kaapotkleit therefore represents an interesting period of transition, when traditional village clothing was gradually giving way to modern European fashions while still retaining distinctly Estonian materials and craftsmanship.

I just have to share my happiness about finding such a great place in Marizbe area on the Livonian Coast, which we will be visiting during our Magnificent Mittens and Manors of Latvia craft tour in June 4-12, 2027.
I am working together with our tour guide Dženeta Marinska and although the Dundaga castle is great, this local muzeum and B&B "Stūrīši" has a lot of character. W can enjoy them both.
