Small spaces are terrible liars.
When a room is tiny, every inch has to explain itself. There is nowhere for a muddled plan—or the chair nobody really needs—to hide.

It is one reason I have always loved designing small rooms. They make us get honest about what matters, what genuinely belongs and what has simply been taking up residence.

And here is the part people often underestimate: a small project is not necessarily a simple project.

A bathroom, entrance, work corner or bedroom refresh may involve fewer square feet, but every decision still affects the next one. In fact, the smaller the room, the less room there is for wishful thinking—or inaccurate measurements.

One cabinet is rarely only one cabinet.

It has to work with storage, reach, clearances, nearby outlets, lighting—and the order in which the installer needs to do the work.

That is why I find this question more useful than asking whether a project is “big” or “small”:

What other decisions does this one touch?

A modest change does not need a huge, complicated plan. But it does need the right questions before the work begins. That can prevent several decisions from having to be made twice.

This is the kind of practical thinking we will use in Renovation Readiness on September 16.

Pretty is the fun part.

Planning is what stops the pretty part from becoming a very expensive headache.

“Measure twice, cut once,” as the saying goes.

I would add: make the decisions in the right order—and check that the sofa fits through the door before ordering it.

Which home project is already bossing you around?

You know the one. You have screenshots, samples and perhaps a contractor’s name written down somewhere—but you still cannot quite explain what the job actually includes.

After more than 25 years in design, I have learned this:

“If you cannot explain the scope, you are not ready to shop.”

Before you buy anything, try describing the entire project in one clear sentence. If you cannot, that is where the real work begins.

I was helping a client think through what belongs on her shelves, and of course it made me go home and side-eye my own.

Because a home is not meant to be staged to death.

The good stuff should still feel connected to you somehow.

The books that changed you. The odd little thing that makes no sense but makes you smile. The weirdo object from Nana that still has a pulse.

Editing a room is not about making it perfect.

It is asking:

Does this still belong to the life I am living now?
