Twosday 🌼🌼

A pair of Paavo Tynell ceiling lamps, model 9040 for Taito.

Among Tynell’s ceiling lamps, this and several related models have earned the nickname “cannon shells” for their unmistakable resemblance to the form. Yet of all the variations, this may be the most elegant and delicate: its otherwise austere shell is scattered with beautiful brass flowers that completely steal the show.

There is something wonderfully symbolic about flowers blooming across a form associated with weaponry. It brings to mind Bernie Boston’s iconic Flower Power photograph, capturing a young protester placing flowers into the barrels of soldiers’ rifles during an anti-war demonstration in Washington, D.C., in 1967.

From cannon shells to flowers. From darkness to light.

The world needs more light. The world needs more flowers. 🌼

Paavo Tynell, model 9040, Taito, Finland, 1950s.

38,068 votes and a clear victory.

At the Kaunis Koti competition held during the Helsinki Suurmessut in 1951, visitors were asked to choose their favourite from three artist-designed glass bowls produced by Riihimäen Lasi.

Helena Tynell’s now-iconic “Kaulus” received 38,068 votes, ahead of Nanny Still with 28,137 and Arttu Brummer with 16,551. In total, an extraordinary 82,756 votes were cast.

This particular example makes the story even more special. It is an early version, signed Helena Turpeinen, her maiden name, dating it to before her taking her husband's name Tynell (Paavo Tynell) after their marriage in 1947.

With its wide, finely ribbed and line engraved collar seemingly floating above the softly formed body, Kaulus feels remarkably fresh more than seven decades after winning the public’s vote.

Mid-century modern adjustable table lamp, model 24132 by Valinte, 1960s.

A beautifully balanced design combining clean modernist lines with the warmth of natural teak and the refined sheen of nickel-plated brass. The original woven shade, with its warm red tone and subtle checked pattern, adds texture and character to the composition.

Standing an impressive 60 cm tall, the adjustable shade makes this an elegant yet highly practical example of Finnish mid-century lighting; modernist, functional, and full of warmth.

Valinte, Finland, c. 1950s–60s.

The Domus Academica floor lamp, designed in 1947 by Gunnel Nyman and manufactured by Idman for the Domus Academica student housing in Helsinki.

Gunnel Nyman rarely followed a straight line for long. Look closely at her work in glass, ceramics, and silver, and you will see the same instinct for gentle curves and organic forms. It also found its way into the furniture and lighting she designed.

The Domus lamp is a wonderful example. The stem seems almost reluctant to turn at a hard or unnatural angle, instead bending gently towards the shade. Even the shade itself continues that language with its soft, sweeping profile.

Nyman had a remarkable ability to bring softness and grace to functional design. Nearly 80 years later, this lamp feels as sophisticated and contemporary as ever.

Lisa Johansson-Papé (1907–1989) was a Finnish designer best known for her lighting designs. She approached lamp design primarily through function, allowing form to follow the needs of the light itself. After designing furniture for Stockmann for a number of years, she turned her attention to lighting, working with the Stockmann-owned company Orno Oy. Her lamps received international recognition, including several medals at the Milan Triennials during the 1950s.
