Vuonna 371 eaa. Leuktran taistelussa olivat vastakkain Sparta ja Theba. Theba kukisti Spartan, ja taistelun ratkaisseeksi joukoksi nostettiin yksi eliittisotilasyksikkö.
Tämä Theban pyhäksi joukoksi kutsuttu eliittisotilasyksikkö koostui 150:stä miesparista. Ajateltiin, että rakastavaiset olivat valmiita taistelemaan viimeiseen hengenvetoonsa, kun he olivat kumppaninsa rinnalla taistelussa. Myös filosofi Platon kirjoitti miesparien armeijasta:
[Symposium 179a]: ”Rakastunut mies ei koskaan tahtoisi rakkaansa näkevän hänen pakenevan taistelusta tai heittävän aseensa pois; hän mieluummin kuolisi tuhat kertaa. Eikä kukaan ole niin pelkuri, etteikö Rakkauden voima kykenisi sytyttämään hänessä sellaista urheutta, joka tekee hänestä rohkeimpienkin veroisen."

The Battle of Leuctra was fought on 371 BCE between Thebes and Sparta. Thebes managed to defeat Sparta, and one elite military unit was credited for playing the crucial role in the battle.
Theis unit, known as the Sacred Band of Thebes, was composed of 150 male pairs. It was thought that lovers were more willing to fight to their last breath when standing beside their partner. The philosopher Plato writes about the concept of a male lovers’ army:
[Symposium 179a] "For a man in love would surely choose to have all the rest of the host rather than his favorite see him forsaking his station or flinging away his arms; sooner than this, he would prefer to die many deaths: while, as for leaving his favorite in the lurch, or not succoring him in his peril, no man is such a craven that Love's own influence cannot inspire him with a valor that makes him equal to the bravest born."
