On May 1st, we celebrated the historical and cultural relevance of the Lei. 🌺 Lei Day is a day of celebrating the beautiful symbol of aloha.
Did you know that practitioners strip the bark of the hau tree to make the cordage needed to be the “string” of the lei? Then flowers are collected and strung with care and precision. If someone gives you a lei -lower your head to accept it with deep gratitude for the Aloha it was given. The amount of time and effort that goes into creating a lei is a true gift when someone gives it to you-so accepting it in a manner of gratitude with a kiss, hug or Mahalo is important.
(I think Western culture has the experience of the plastic lei when considering lei with it’s quickly made and thrown away aspect. Never throw away a lei. Place it back into nature.)
And if you would like some true cultural education, see what it takes to make the cordage and the more intricate Lei, take time to pick flowers, string and tie them to know.
