A little piece of Venetian magic is coming to THRIFTWORX 🍬✨

I’ve commissioned a small batch of Murano glass Candy Squishworx, handmade exclusively for us by a talented father-and-son duo on the island of Burano.

Each one is completely bespoke, genuinely handcrafted and unavailable anywhere else. These tiny glass treasures will be given away to buyers during my Whatnot shows on the Darren Millar | THRIFTWORX account.

Something truly special, made on the Venetian islands and heading all the way to the USA. 🇮🇹🇺🇸

I completely fell in love with Burano. Wandering beside the canals, surrounded by brightly painted homes, felt like stepping into a little dream I wasn’t quite ready to leave. One of those beautiful places I know I’ll carry with me long after Venice. 🇮🇹✨

A chance visit to the Ferro family’s Yalos Murano factory quickly became a treasure hunt through centuries of Venetian glassmaking. I sourced colourful Murano glass, lion-head medallions, a stunning glass sink and rare sample tiles connected to the late British artist Joe Tilson.

After lunch in Burano, I discovered Artistico Bombon, a small family workshop filled with handmade glass fruits and candies. In an amazing coincidence, the owner’s son is dating a member of the Ferro family. Two glassmaking families, connected by both craft and love, just one short water bus journey apart.

I came looking for treasures and left with beautiful pieces, new friendships and the perfect excuse to return.

Many of these finds will soon be available through THRIFTWORX on Whatnot.

While wandering around Murano, Venice, I stumbled across El Bon Bon completely by chance.

The shop belongs to Roberta Piga, who creates beautiful handmade glass pieces using a torch. You can watch her working live in the shop alongside her daughter.

While I was browsing, Roberta created a miniature glass pig and kindly gifted it to me. The pig is her trademark animal because of her surname, Piga, which makes it such a special reminder of my visit.

With so many counterfeit Murano pieces being sold across Venice, it is important to find hidden gems like Roberta’s shop. Here, you can meet the artist, watch the pieces being made and know that the real craftsperson is benefiting from her work.

I couldn’t leave empty-handed, so I filled my bag with Christmas trees, Santa ornaments, ultra-mini glass animals and a few extra surprises.

Roberta isn’t on Facebook or Instagram. I did try to persuade her, but until then, you’ve got me finding these little hidden gems for you!

If you ever find yourself on Murano Island, be sure to pop into El Bon Bon and say hello. I can’t wait to show you my haul!
