Twenty years after the release of “Marie-Antoinette”, Sofia Coppola’s acclaimed film continues to captivate with its distinctive aesthetic, blending historical elegance with contemporary audacity.

To mark this anniversary, the presents an exhibition at the Petit Trianon, revisiting the film’s iconic costumes, sets and interiors.

This anniversary also offers an opportunity to revisit the film’s sumptuous interiors and the textiles that contributed to their distinctive aesthetic, including the “Rose & Lilas” border by Tassinari & Chatel, from the Exception collection.

A lampas with a cannetillé ground, this border was originally commissioned in 1770 for the summer furnishings of Queen Marie-Antoinette’s bedchamber at the Palace of Versailles, on the occasion of her marriage to the future Louis XVI. Its rose and lilac motifs, set against an apple-green checked background, adorned the wall panels, curtains, bed and furniture, bringing a delicate floral touch to the royal interiors.

LOUVRE MUSEUM – DUKE OF MORNY’S SALON

At the heart of the magnificent Salon of the Duke of Morny at the Louvre Museum, an exceptional crimson cut velvet takes centre stage. Woven by Tassinari & Chatel and faithfully recreated in 1960 from an original Regency-era design (pattern TC 973r), this remarkable fabric embodies the House’s textile expertise.

Following the departure of the Ministry of Finance, the Salon has regained its former splendour, with its opulent furnishings and sumptuous crimson velvet reflecting the lavish taste of the Second Empire.

A textile tribute to Charles de Morny, a key figure in the political, artistic and family history of 19th-century France. Half-brother to Napoleon III, a discerning collector and a visionary, he was also instrumental in the creation of the Galerie des Tapisseries.

Twenty years after the release of “Marie-Antoinette”, Sofia Coppola’s acclaimed film continues to captivate with its distinctive aesthetic, blending historical elegance with contemporary audacity.

To mark this anniversary, the presents an immersive exhibition at the Petit Trianon, inviting visitors behind the scenes of this iconic film. Original costumes, props, set photographs and recreated interiors bring its most memorable scenes to life in the very rooms where they were filmed.

Throughout the exhibition, Tassinari & Chatel fabrics offer a further glimpse into this rich decorative heritage. In the Grand Salon, red-toned textiles adorn the seats and curtains. In the Queen’s celebrated Cabinet of Moving Mirrors, armchairs upholstered in the LES FORGERONS lampas reveal the remarkable history of a design that has travelled through centuries and distinguished interiors.

First used in 1787 for the bedroom of Thierry de Ville d’Avray at the Hôtel de la Marine, this design was later selected in 1968 for the Jacob furniture of the Count of Provence, now housed in the Queen’s Bo***ir at the Petit Trianon. Today, LES FORGERONS finds a new resonance in Sofia Coppola’s cinematic vision, bringing together textile heritage, decorative arts and the enduring allure of the film.

Savoir-faire: The Canuts’ Art of Weaving

Within our manufactory, this rare and precious savoir-faire is preserved every day. Direct heirs to Lyon’s silk-weaving tradition, the canuts are highly skilled artisans, guardians of a textile excellence passed down through generations.

They oversee the complete preparation of the loom: assembling the structure, adjusting it according to the specific requirements of each order, and setting up the warp threads or bobbins. Every step is carried out by hand, respecting ancestral techniques and gestures.

Each weft thread is manually inserted, while the Jacquard mechanism is operated with precision to bring intricate patterns to life. Throughout the weaving process, the alignment of the design is carefully monitored to ensure perfect continuity and consistency across the entire length of the fabric.

A 100% silk hand-loomed Genovese cut and uncut velvet. An overall floral motif on a lace-like background framed by feathery leaves and flowers. This design could be considered one of the so-called « lace-style » motifs that were all the rage at the beginning of the 18th century.
