When I started drawing shopfronts, I always wanted to draw the details first. Perspective and structure? What’s that 🤭

And I never understood why everything looked a bit crooked or off..

Now I know.. I wasn’t taking the time to stack a few simple boxes first, because almost every object starts as a box in perspective.

Such a proud moment in my art journey.. as a little girl I would never think that I would create something like this for people to enjoy and color 🥰

One of my favourite watercolor drawings from this year. That green facade with the red striped awning is such a good combo in my opinion 🥰

And yes, I’m absolutely obsessed with adding tiny, charming details to every shopfront I draw. The crates, the signs, the stacked fruit… I can’t help myself🤭

3 things that improved my shopfront drawings 🥰

When I first started drawing shopfronts, I always rushed into the tiny details… and spent half my time erasing 😅
Here are the 3 things that changed everything for me:

1️⃣ Start with the big shapes
Find the “bones” of the building first. The fun details come later and they’re much easier to place when the structure is strong.

2️⃣ Build your scene in layers
Foreground, middle, and back.
I used to follow the reference photo exactly, but adding my own elements in front or behind the shop instantly made the sketch more interesting.

3️⃣ Add details that tell a story
A warm coffee cup, a sign, a little dog waiting outside…
These tiny things make the shopfront feel cozy and alive.
