Sweet Cassie recently crossed the rainbow bridge and a family member commissioned me to do a portrait for the human family she left behind.

A typical beagle, she was full of adventure and undoubtedly leaves many happy memories with those who loved her, which I hope will spring to mind every time they look at her portrait ❤️

I recently read about an extremely rare condition called polycoria where a single iris contains more than one pupil. Both pupils constrict and dilate independently of each other dependent on light and individuals who have the condition can experience issues with their vision.

Photos of eyes with polycoria are fascinating to look at and made for a slightly different practice drawing eyes this evening.

The process of creating a portrait begins when I receive photos from my clients. Sometimes I use a few to get a full picture and a sense of the character I am capturing, but sometimes one photo is all it takes.

The beautiful Clementine is a perfect example of how one photo stood out to me and was perfect for using. It was also one of her hoomum's favourites, which makes the portrait even more special, particularly as Clementine recently crossed the rainbow bridge 🌈

Sometimes I like to take a photo at each stage of the process, and I did this with Clementine's portrait, so you can see how I went about capturing this gorgeous girl in pen and ink. Isn't she a stunner?

Clementine had a long journey home to the USA, but she has arrived safely and I hope she will bring a smile to her hoomum every time she looks at her, reminding her of happy memories and the wonderful connection they shared 🥰

In the early days of my business I had a vague sense I wanted to do something creative and my first business name and logo reflected that. I started with lots of textile projects and recently found a few I'd been working on, which have given me a bit of inspiration for something new! I love how my business has evolved over time, and I hope that I can tap into some of my earlier ideas again going forward to combine my love of drawing, textiles and animals. I'd love to know what you all think about textile art as another string to my bow! ❤️

My beautiful girls love coming up to the studio with me, and have been known to cause a bit of chaos. Like the time they locked me in (it was the spaniel...no doubt in my mind!!), or the time a couple of them stood in paint and walked across the little seating area out front (spaniel was involved again!!), and on occasion they have stolen items!!! I wouldn't have it any other way though 🥰🤭

Ooh, this was a bit of pure joy for me today! Something so simple as melting some wax and pressing my initials into it, signifying the end of my work on a commission and the beginning of it's journey to it's forever home. Safe travels beautiful girl ❤️

I'm working away on a couple of commissions, which will be revealed at a later date, but today I received a new gadget I'm looking forward to using when I get them ready to send off to their new homes 😍🥰❤️

I love receiving packages from other artists and crafts people, to gain inspiration from how they package their items, as well as supporting small businesses. I received this yesterday containing a birthday card and it made me smile because of the little details. The card is in a brown paper bag which as you can see has had lots of little, thoughtful touches. The fact the bag had been popped into the same kind of protective envelope, bound with a red string and my name on the label made me smile and think about how I can personalise my drawings for delivery, as I use the same type of envelope. I usually add a wee note and my business card too, but maybe there is more I could do.💡❤️

What sort of thoughtful touches do you appreciate when receiving a package containing something you've ordered? 🤔

Hi everyone!

For all my new followers, and those who have been following me for some time, let me introduce myself!

As you'll have worked out, I'm Kirstie, the woman behind Kirstie Mutch Art! I trained as a primary teacher, ended up specialising in working with children and young people who had additional support needs, and left the profession in 2018, after 22 years. During a short career break whilst I decided what would come next, I started a wee business which eventually morphed into Kirstie Mutch Art. Although never trained beyond art in secondary school, I have always loved being creative and find that disappearing into my studio helps me unwind and forget about the outside world for a while. I have been known to say I'm going up to my studio for an hour then emerging 3 or 4 hours later!! My studio is a beautiful blue shed at the end of our garden, crammed full of all kinds of art materials...it's my favourite place to escape.

My day job is as a careers adviser and student support tutor at SRUC (Scotland's Rural College) which I love and which inspires me as I am happiest in rural locations surrounded by animals!

I have had dogs all my life so it was no surprise to anyone when I got my own after graduating from University. Since then, I've had the privilege of 6 beautiful animal companions in my life! Although 3 have crossed the rainbow bridge, I feel they are always close by.

I love painting and drawing animals, but I have equally enjoyed opportunities to do something a little different, so I'm always open to a new challenge!

If you'd like to commission a piece of art from me, please feel free to get in touch via email, and we can have a chat ❤️

Why do I ask for a deposit when a client orders a commission?

When I started my business this wasn't something I did, and I got burned by someone who decided they no longer wanted a piece I had completed for them 🥺. This was obviously disappointing, but the client hadn't done their research, hadn't asked the right questions and clearly hadn't looked at my work to really know what I did.

It wasn't a big piece, but as with all my artwork, I had spent time and care on creating the piece as well as money on resources, and as each commission is personal to the individual, they are not something I can sell on to another buyer. On researching other artists and advice on pricing and whether to take a deposit, there were some horrible stories of artists being undervalued and taken advantage of, and I made the decision to take a deposit at what was generally considered a reasonable rate.

If you want to commission a piece of art from me but are unsure about any aspect of the process, I am more than happy to discuss your questions and work with you to create something you love ❤️
