The Border Weaver

The Border Weaver The Border Weaver was created to share my journey with the art of weaving. Viking age re-enactment πŸ–€

My aim is to learn how to use traditional methods mixed with modern styles to create one of a kind items either for my own home or as gifts.

I have noticed recently a few traditional craft workshops going on and I have also been asked if I would do a Pegloom course. This has been on my mind for a while so maybe the right time is now to sow that seed??

What are everyone's thoughts? What would you like to know? Things I can include ......

- Types of fleece/materials you can pegloom with.
- Best breeds for certain projects.
- Raw fleece and the washing process.
- Carding, by hand, using a machine and wool combing.
- Setting up a loom
- Weaving your own rug from start to finish.

Just dabbling with the possibility but it will more than likely be held at Moorforge and we will need 2 days if I'm teaching the whole shabang. All materials will be supplied, camping will be available and refreshments will be by the bucket load (including biscuits). You will have your own handmade rug to take with you by the end.

Thoughts??

Collab!!!!

Peter Merrett

I am finally back on Instagram after technology threw a spanner in the works, but here, look at this beauty!!!!

My wonderful friend Peter Merrett who works his magic with leather and bone has made this beautiful bag inspired by North Norse/Sami culture. It is made from sealskin with the soft leather being goatskin and the handle made from Norweigan reindeer antler which is based on archaeological finds in Norway.!!!

AND the tablet woven strap is........ you guessed it!, made by The Border Weaver!!! 100% alpaca in dark grey, burgundy, yellow and cream.

Beautiful!!!!

Peter will be at the Jorvik Viking Festival with his stall of handmade goods..... including this bag. Find him on the Upper level in the Merchant Adventurers Hall!

Some of the things that have been occupying my wintering time at home.

My heddle loom - Persistence is key! I was going to sell my loom as I just wasn't feeling it, but I've cracked it and now I'm quite content with the progress of my first scarf! A bit messy in places but hey, its a learning curve!

The second picture is of a personal item that I was given in 2012. Set to be thrown in the bin, this knitted depiction of coastal landscape was knitted by a Buddhist monk who used to live at my old workplace. I've given it a gentle wash and I'm now popping a back on it to keep its shape. Objects from the earth will be popped back into the little knitted pockets.

Good Morning!!!

The time is upon us to slowly prepare for the coming event season and The Border Weaver has been confirmed for 2 so far! Set on my home turf, Moorforge is the perfect place to dive into the world of heritage crafts!

I took the winter period as a chance to recoup and rest after a busy year but now I am working hard to build my stock up for the coming months. I may have some new bits and pieces to sell as well so watch this space!!

71 hours and I've come to the unplanned end.

I didnt make it to 3m long as unfortunately I massively misjudged how much fleece I would need so I have finished it at just shy of 2m with the option of extending it once a new batch of Hebridean comes in around June. Most importantly it will be in her new home in time for Christmas to warm the tootsies!

With 1 snapped warp thread and friction burns to show, I think it's turned out beautiful!

56 hours in! I may have depleted the world of Hebridean fleece!!!
