🍎✨ THE WITCH’S SAMHAIN APPLE ✨🍎

Nine wishes. One enchanted apple. A little kitchen witchery. 🖤

This Sunday at 8pm, I’ll be going live for a special collective Samhain spell, and I’d love you to join me!

Samhain marks the turning of the seasons, the end of the harvest and the beginning of the darker half of the year. A time steeped in folklore, tradition and magick. 🌙

Together, we’ll be creating our very own enchanted apples, working with the Magick of Nine to honour the year behind us, nurture the blessings we hold dear and plant the seeds of our wishes for the year ahead.

And of course, there’ll be a little Irish folklore, some interesting apple magick and probably a fair amount of me talking s**te. 🤣

🧙‍♀️ WANT TO JOIN IN?

You don’t need anything fancy! Just gather:

🍎 2 apples (one for our spell and one for a little magickal surprise!)

🖤 9 whole cloves (the spice, not garlic! 🤣)

🌿 A little rosemary, fresh or dried

🤎 Cinnamon, ground or sticks

🕯️ A candle and safe holder

✨ A small plate or bowl

🔪 A knife and chopping board

📝 Pen and paper

🔮 Optional: Your favourite crystal, spell oil or anything you’d like to add to your altar.

And, naturally, a cuppa and a cosy spot to settle in!

No experience necessary. No expensive ingredients. No complicated rituals. Just a little intention, a little magick and a lovely evening spent together.

If you don’t have the ingredients, you’re still more than welcome to join us, watch along and take part in whatever way feels right for you. 🫶

📅 Sunday 1st November
⏰ 8pm UK time
📍 Live here at Molly’s Magickal Makes

Come as you are, bring your apple, and let’s make a little magick together.

Blessed Samhain, witches! 🍎🌙🖤

Halloween is one of those things we’ve become so accustomed to importing from America that we sometimes forget the bloody thing has its roots right here in Ireland. 🎃

Long before inflatable skeletons, pumpkin spice everything and spending £40 on sweets for children you don’t even know, our ancestors were already making a whole production out of the changing seasons.

Samhain marked the beginning of winter in the traditional Irish calendar. The harvest was over, the darker months were coming, and Halloween was a time when people believed the boundary between our world and the Otherworld was particularly thin.

Which, when you think about it, must have been absolutely terrifying before electricity. Imagine living in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by darkness, and your neighbour rocks up at the window wearing a homemade mask. I’d simply pass away. 💀

But there’s something I genuinely love about these traditions.

They weren’t all about frightening people. There was protection, remembrance, fortune-telling, food, community and a healthy appreciation for the things we couldn’t explain.

People made protective crosses for their homes. Families gathered around fires. They played games to predict the future, remembered those who’d passed, and passed down stories about creatures lurking beyond the safety of the hearth.

And somewhere along the way, we swapped terrifying carved turnips for pumpkins because, frankly, whoever decided to hollow out a turnip clearly had more patience than I do.

I think it’s worth remembering that so much of what we associate with witchcraft and Halloween today comes from ordinary people finding ways to make sense of the seasons, protect their families and connect with something bigger than themselves.

And occasionally terrorise the neighbours. Naturally. 🤣

🖤 Which of these old Irish traditions do you remember from childhood?

Forget swiping right. In documented Irish Halloween divination customs, people threw apple peels, pulled cabbages from the ground, and fumbled over crockery to see if they would get a date.

🍎 Apple peel: Throw it over your shoulder and see what letter it resembles. In some recorded traditions, that letter was interpreted as the initial of your future sweetheart’s name.

🥬 Cabbage: Pull one from the ground, sometimes blindfolded. In documented regional customs, the roots and soil clinging to it could be read as clues about a future partner’s character or fortune. Modern retellings often simplify this into “the cabbage predicts your future spouse,” but the historical details varied from place to place.

💍 Three saucers: Choose one without looking. In some recorded versions, a ring was associated with marriage, water with emigration, and clay with death. These meanings were not universal, though, and could differ depending on the community or source.

The exact details varied by region and period, so it’s worth separating the customs found in folklore records from the playful versions shared online today. The modern retellings are often more dramatic—and much funnier—than the original accounts.

Still, imagine entrusting your entire romantic future to a cabbage. 🤣

That said, I hear most men on Tinder are fu***ng cabbages anyway. 🙈

Which one would you have tried? 👀

October has entered its “light a candle and mind your bloody boundaries” era. 🍂🖤

This month’s magick is all about remembrance, protection, transformation and knowing when to let things go.

🌼 Marigold and cosmos bring warmth and balance.
💎 Opal and tourmaline are October’s birthstones. I’ve added obsidian for a little extra protective energy.
🌙 Hecate, the Cailleach and Cerridwen fit the season’s themes of crossroads, winter and transformation.

And with Samhain approaching on the evening of 31 October, it’s a beautiful time to remember those who came before us and decide what we’re not dragging into the darker half of the year.

✨ Lazy witch ritual: Write down one thing you’re ready to release. Tear it up, recycle it and take one tiny step towards moving on.

No elaborate ceremony. No 47 ingredients. Just intention and a wee bit of follow-through. 😂

Save this for your October magick. Which correspondence are you most drawn to? 👀

Sometimes it’s just getting outside, noticing the changing leaves, feeling the wind and giving your poor overworked brain a minute to exist.

You don’t need to turn every peaceful moment into a ritual.

You’re allowed to just enjoy it.

🍂🍂🍂

I had a particularly tough weekend where I was in an unearthly amount of pain from a particularly rough fibro flare, my uterus was once again trying to annihilate me from the inside out and I am also in the process of changing my anti depressants to try and find some semblance of a will to live.

I had a dog sit booked though. I couldn’t cancel. So I persevered.

I was in agony. I cried. Multiple times.

Luckily I was near the ecos centre and so I walked there twice a day with the puppy who terrorised me for 4 days and we just sat.

Found a bench. And sat. A different one each time. Taking it all in. Breathing through the mental and physical pain.

Noticing the change in weather. Frost nipping at my toes. The sun shining gloriously on my face.

Just sitting. Just breathing.
Just getting through another day.

I made it.

The sky is throwing ROCKS and I’m taking that as a sign to make a wish. ☄️😂

The Orionids are back! They peak overnight 21–22 October, when bits of Halley’s Comet streak across our sky. Halley’s out here leaving crumbs and we’re turning them into a ritual. Iconic.

🌙 Today’s first-quarter Moon (18 October) is a lovely nudge to turn “I wish” into “right, what am I actually doing about it?” That’s the magick I’m here for.

✨ Your lazy witch ritual:

Pick ONE wish or intention.

If you spot a meteor, say it to yourself.

Then take one tiny step towards it.

No meteor? Clouds? Can’t be arsed standing in a field at 2am? Make the wish anyway. The sky isn’t checking attendance. 🤣

If you do want to watch, find a safe, dark spot and try after 2am on 22 October. The bright Moon may hide some fainter streaks, so don’t expect a full fireworks display.

Are you team “wrap up and look up” or team “manifest from under the duvet”? 👀

🔮 Which crystal matches your current level of bu****it? 😂

Sometimes we’re drawn to a crystal because it’s exactly the energy we need in our lives. Other times, the crystal chooses us. 👀✨

So, which of these five is calling your name?

🔥 1. FIRE QUARTZ
For when life has knocked the stuffing out of you and it’s time to reclaim your spark. Confidence, courage, motivation and getting your s**t together.

🌿 2. GARDEN QUARTZ
For the overthinkers, the worriers and those of us with 47 tabs open in our brains. Grounding, inner peace, clarity and finding your centre amongst the chaos.

💚 3. DIOPSIDE
For when your emotions are all over the bloody shop. Emotional healing, compassion, forgiveness and releasing the things you’ve been carrying for far too long.

🌸 4. FLOWER AGATE
For the woman who’s ready to bloom but hasn’t quite figured out where she’s going yet. Personal growth, new beginnings, self-belief and stepping into your potential.

💜 5. HACKMANITE
For when you’ve spent far too long shrinking yourself to keep everyone else comfortable. Intuition, self-expression, authenticity and trusting your own bloody judgement.

✨ Whether you’re looking for a little energetic support, setting intentions or simply feeling drawn to a particular stone, there’s no right or wrong answer.

And no, you don’t need all five.

Although I do happen to have all five available, should your inner magpie disagree. 👀😂

🖤 Which number are you picking? Tell me in the comments!

🧙‍♀️ Your home is already full of magick.

And no, you don’t need to spend £200 turning your living room into a bloody metaphysical gift shop.

One of my biggest frustrations with modern witchcraft is how often it’s presented as something you have to BUY your way into.

Special candles. Fancy crystals. Elaborate altars. Seventeen different herbs harvested under the light of a full moon.

Calm your t**s, Margaret. It’s a Wednesday. 🤣

The truth is, everyday objects and spaces can become part of your personal practice.

🚪 Your doorway can remind you to establish boundaries.

🪞 Your mirror can become a place to practise self-love.

🪟 Opening a window can symbolise releasing what no longer serves you.

☕ Your morning cuppa can become a moment of intention.

🛏️ And your bed? A reminder that rest isn’t something you have to earn.

You don’t need elaborate rituals to practise witchcraft.

Sometimes all it takes is turning something you already do into something you do with intention.

Magick works because belief changes behaviour. And behaviour changes outcomes.

It’s not about how much you own. It’s about what you actually DO.

So stop worrying about whether you’ve got the right tools and start using what you’ve already got.

✨ Which everyday part of your home feels the most magickal to you?

Disclaimer: if you do happen to want to spend £200 on special candles, fancy crystals or elaborate altar decor - then please check out my website 😂 we all have a little magpie in us and I am more than willing to help supply the shiny things 😂😂😂

🎃 Halloween today vs Halloween in old Ireland. 💀

Nowadays we’ve got adorable little pumpkins with their happy faces and cosy autumn aesthetics.

Meanwhile, our Irish ancestors were carving the most horrifying faces imaginable into TURNIPS.

Apparently Halloween wasn’t frightening enough without adding a possessed root vegetable to the equation. 🤣

And there’s actually some fascinating history behind these terrifying wee fu***rs!

Long before pumpkins became the face of Halloween, people in Ireland hollowed out turnips, carved frightening faces into them and placed candles inside.

These lanterns were associated with Samhain, the ancient festival marking the beginning of winter, when spirits were believed to roam among the living. The terrifying faces were intended to frighten away unwanted visitors.

👻 Ever heard of Stingy Jack?

According to Irish folklore, Jack was a crafty bastard who tricked the Devil himself. When he died, he was refused entry to both Heaven and Hell.

Condemned to wander the earth, he carried a burning ember inside a hollowed-out turnip to light his way.

And that’s one of the legends behind the Jack-o’-lantern!

🎃 So when did pumpkins enter the chat?

During the 19th century, Irish immigrants brought their Halloween traditions to North America.

There they found pumpkins, which were plentiful and a hell of a lot easier to carve than a bloody turnip.

By the mid-1800s, pumpkin carving was becoming established in America, eventually giving us the Halloween tradition we recognise today.

The National Museum of Ireland even has a terrifying plaster model of a traditional Donegal ghost turnip, based on an example donated in 1943!

So while we’re all decorating with cute pumpkins, remember our ancestors were creating vegetables that looked like they’d crawled straight out of Hell.

And quite frankly, I think we should bring them back. 🤣💀

Be honest. Pumpkins or turnips? Which is scarier? 👀
