Winter gardening tips ❄️🌱

Winter is a great time to look after what you already have and prepare for the growing season ahead.

✔ Give houseplants enough light
Move plants onto bright window sills to make the most of winter daylight.

✔ Support garden wildlife
Hang fat balls and keep bird feeders topped up to help birds through colder months.

✔ Mulch borders and beds
Mulching helps protect soil, retain moisture, and improve structure ahead of spring.

✔ Clean and maintain tools
Washing, drying, and sharpening tools now will save time later and help prevent the spread of disease.

✔ Carry out winter pruning
Prune suitable trees, shrubs, and fruit plants while they are dormant.

✔ Clear gutters and drains
Remove fallen leaves and debris to prevent blockages and winter water damage.

✔ Dispose of diseased leaves properly
Check fallen leaves for signs of disease and remove them from the garden to reduce problems next year.

✔ Clean seed trays and plan ahead
Wash trays thoroughly and start planning what you want to grow this year.

✔ Protect plants from frost
Use fleece, cloches, or move tender plants to a sheltered spot during cold spells.

A little effort now makes spring gardening much easier.

January Bug of the Month: Silverfish 🐛

Spotting silverfish indoors during winter is more common than you might think.

These small, silvery insects are most active at night and tend to hide in damp, dark areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, and utility rooms. They are attracted to moisture and feed on materials like paper, cardboard, and wallpaper paste.

The good news?
Silverfish do not bite, sting, or spread disease, but they can cause damage to household items if left unchecked.

How to reduce silverfish in your home
✔ Improve ventilation in damp rooms
✔ Fix leaks and reduce excess moisture
✔ Keep areas dry and clutter-free
✔ Seal cracks and crevices where they hide

Reducing humidity is one of the most effective ways to discourage silverfish and keep them from settling in.

January gardening jobs 🌱

January is all about preparation. A little effort now sets you up for a stronger, easier growing season later on.

✔ Start sowing slow-growing seeds under cover
Chillies, peppers, tomatoes for greenhouse growing and sweet peas benefit from an early start.

✔ Check and organise seeds
Sort what you already have and make a list of what you need before sowing begins.

✔ Clean pots and trays
Fresh, clean containers reduce the risk of disease and give seedlings the best start.

✔ Prepare your sowing space
A bright windowsill, greenhouse or heated propagator will help seeds germinate evenly.

✔ Protect plants from frost
Use fleece, cloches, or move tender plants to a sheltered spot during cold snaps.

✔ Improve soil ready for spring
Add compost or organic matter where the ground is workable.

Wildflowers to Sow in November 🌿

Now’s the perfect time to sow native wildflowers that thrive with a winter chill. These species naturally drop their seeds in autumn, ready to burst into life come spring, and they’re brilliant for pollinators too.

🌸 Red Campion (Silene dioica) – Great for shady woodland edges, loved by bees and moths.
🌼 Oxeye Daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare) – A summer meadow classic that thrives in most soils.
🌸 Common Knapweed (Centaurea nigra) – A top nectar source for bees and butterflies.
🌼 Field Scabious (Knautia arvensis) – Long-flowering and sun-loving, perfect for dry soils.
🌸 Wild Carrot (Daucus carota) – Attracts hoverflies and small bees; elegant in borders.
🌼 Cowslip (Primula veris) – One of the first blooms of spring; ideal for grassy verges.
🌸 Meadow Buttercup (Ranunculus acris) – Thrives in damp lawns and meadows.
🌼 Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) – Hardy, drought-tolerant and great for wildlife gardens.

🪴 Tip: Lightly rake your soil, scatter seed, and let winter do the rest. Nature knows best.

Autumn is tree planting season in the UK, the perfect time to give young trees and shrubs the best possible start.

When the soil is still warm and moist, roots can establish before winter sets in, giving your plants a head start for the spring. To make the most of this season, use a tree planting compost designed specifically for young trees and shrubs.

Unlike regular garden compost, tree planting compost is enriched with nutrients and organic matter to support long-term root growth and healthy establishment. It improves soil structure, boosts drainage, and gradually releases essential nutrients, helping your trees to thrive for years to come.

As autumn deepens and daylight fades, your garden doesn’t have to lose its charm. With a few clever touches, you can keep it bright, warm and inviting long after sunset.

💡 Make the most of natural light – Move planters to sunny spots and choose light-coloured pots to reflect warmth.

✨ Reflect and brighten – Use mirrors, pale paving or metallic ornaments to bounce light into darker corners.

🌿 Add solar and LED lighting – Line paths, highlight feature plants or add string lights for a soft evening glow.

🕯️ Create a cosy ambience – Woven lanterns, storm jars and evergreens bring texture and warmth to any space.

Keep enjoying your garden throughout the darker months; it’s all about working with the light you have.

As the temperature drops, you might notice a few extra eight-legged visitors indoors, and find yourself wondering, why am I seeing more spiders at the moment? 🕷🕸

Dr Ian Bedford, our resident entomology expert, breaks down what’s really happening during Spider Season, when most of Britain’s 650 spider species reach maturity and start looking for mates (and warmth).

Find out why they appear more often in autumn, how they help around the home, and what to do if you’d rather keep your distance.
