The most productive offices are the ones making space for rest.
It’s impossible for people to stay at their best without time to recharge. But real rest can be hard to come by, especially when email notifications keep us connected to work long after we’ve stepped away from our desks.
Some of the best ideas come from proper, restorative rest, when people have time to process information, reset their focus and think clearly again. You’re a lot less likely to have that lightbulb moment in a two-minute coffee break while half-checking your Teams notifications.
That’s why rest needs to be considered in workplace design, not treated as an afterthought.
Wellness rooms, quiet corners and informal social spaces can all help people switch off during the working day. Where possible, access to outdoor space for fresh air and a change of pace helps too.
Giving people somewhere to pause properly doesn’t make an office less productive. It makes it a much easier place to do good work.
