👋 Hello to all my new followers!

I’ve noticed quite a few new faces appearing here recently, so I thought it was probably time to say hello and introduce myself properly.

I’m Nicky, the person behind Highland Furniture Artist, working from the beautiful North West Highlands of Scotland.

I restore, redesign and breathe new life into furniture, but my work has grown to include so much more — upholstery, bespoke commissions, decorative pieces, unusual one-offs and those slightly different projects that don’t always fit neatly into a box!

I love taking something ordinary, tired or forgotten and turning it into something individual — whether that means restoring its character, completely reinventing it, or creating something especially for a client.

A lot of what I do is completely bespoke, so if you have an old piece of furniture tucked away, an idea you’d love to bring to life, or even an object you’re wondering “could something be done with this?” — please feel free to get in touch.

This lovely little footstool is finished — and I’m really pleased with how it has turned out.

When it arrived, the original upholstery had already been stripped back, revealing the old webbing and timber frame underneath. After chatting through the options with my client, we decided that rather than covering all that character up, we would make a feature of it.

The timber has been gently cleaned and refreshed while deliberately retaining its age, marks and imperfections. The original black turned legs have also been kept — I wanted this little stool to still feel like itself, rather than make it look brand new.

Then came the upholstery. ❤️

The gorgeous red and green tartan has completely brought it back to life, with a plump new upholstered top and double piping made from the same fabric to give a really lovely tailored finish around the exposed timber frame.

I think the combination of the slightly time-worn wood, original legs and that rich tartan works beautifully. It feels traditional and Highland without being overly polished — exactly the balance I was hoping for.

It’s been a while since I’ve had an upholstery commission in the workshop, and I thoroughly enjoyed this one. 🥰

The first image has been digitally staged to show the finished footstool in a home setting. The footstool itself is my client’s actual piece and my own upholstery work.

🌿 Finished and ready for their new home… 🌿

This latest commission has been such a pleasure to create.

A collection of vintage-style jugs, individually hand-finished with beautiful Scottish thistles, subtle gold detailing and lots of care and attention along the way.

Sometimes the simplest designs are the most effective… and I think these prove that less really is more.

🌿 Friday Finish… almost! 😊

Not quite finished… but I couldn’t resist sharing a little sneak peek.

These are part of another commission for Highland Blooms highland_blooms and this time we’re bringing the beautiful Scottish thistle onto a new collection of jugs.

There are still a few finishing touches to do before the final reveal, but I’m really pleased with how they’re coming together.

Sometimes less really is more.

🌿 A new highland_blooms commission has just arrived on my workbench… 💗

Alongside my current upholstery project, I’ll also be transforming these little jugs into something rather special.

If you’ve been following my recent work, you might already have an idea where this is heading… 👀

Can you guess the theme? 💜

A little clue… it’s inspired by one of Scotland’s most iconic wildflowers.

I can’t wait to bring these to life and share the finished collection with you. Stay tuned!

✨ A new project has arrived in the workshop…

I collected this lovely little footstool yesterday, and today I’m working on the final design plan after chatting through the options with my client.

We’re keeping the beautiful character of the original timber frame, giving it a gentle clean and wax to bring out its natural warmth, before upholstering it in a gorgeous traditional tartan. I’m especially looking forward to this one as it’s been a little while since I’ve had the chance to do some upholstery!

I love projects like this, where it’s not about making a piece look brand new, but about respecting its history while giving it a fresh lease of life.

I’ll share the transformation as it progresses, so keep an eye on the page to see how it evolves.

Sometimes it’s hard to believe these are the same jugs!

My client Highland Blooms asked for a bespoke design in soft sage green with a stag theme, and I loved bringing their ideas to life.

What started as two plain galvanised jugs has been transformed with layers of hand-painted colour, vintage script, subtle ageing, antique gold detailing and finished with delicate Scottish thistle charms.

This is why I love bespoke commissions. Every project is different, and every finished piece tells its own story.

Whether it’s furniture, kitchens, upholstery or decorative home décor, I love creating unique pieces that are made just for you.

✨ Friday Finish ✨

This week’s project has been a real labour of love.

These decorative jugs were created as a bespoke commission for a client who wanted a soft sage green finish with a stag theme, and this is the final result. Highland Blooms

Each one has been carefully hand painted and layered with vintage script, subtle ageing, antique gold detailing and finished with a delicate Scottish thistle charm.

No two pieces I create are ever exactly the same – that’s the beauty of bespoke work.

Whether it’s furniture, kitchens, upholstery or decorative pieces like these, I love taking a client’s ideas and transforming them into something truly unique.

A little work-in-progress…

One commission finished, the next one has already begun.

I love this stage of the process, where ideas start to come together layer by layer. The second jug is still in its early stages, but I’m already trying a few new techniques to make this one even more refined than the last.

I’m keeping the final reveal under wraps for now… 🤫
