Nifty Needles Craft Designs

Nifty Needles Craft Designs I am a tutor for group workshops, specialising in fibre arts. I am passionate about fostering creativity in a supportive and relaxed atmosphere.

I design needlework and sewing patterns/kits, I offer longarm quilting services and handmade crafting notions. I am a fibre artist and tutor who has been spinning, dyeing, sewing, knitting and crocheting for over 40 years. I was taught to sew when I was 10 years old by my mother who was a professional dressmaker. She also taught me to knit, crochet and do needle work. I grew up in a family of women

who filled their time with hand crafts for both work and pleasure. I was taught to spin when I was in my early teens by an elderly family friend in New Zealand, where I was born and grew up, who spun lace weight yarn directly from the fleece to crochet wedding gowns. In New Zealand I worked with adults with a learning disability (mainly autism and Downs Syndrome) to teach and support them to weave, spin, dye and knit articles which they sold in their local craft shop. I have also been an active member in several spinning guilds both in New Zealand and Northern Ireland

Here in Northern Ireland I have held workshops at Ulster Folk & Transport Museum for the local spinning guild. I have also tutored at local craft groups, community groups and Quilting shops (Northern Ireland & Ireland) in knitting, quilting, sewing, crocheting and various other traditional crafts. I have demonstrated spinning at various sheep shows, primary schools and museum open days both in New Zealand and Northern Ireland. I have extensive experience working with younger people, older people and adults with a learning disability so I can tailor workshops to different groups such as community groups, local craft groups or social groups which may include people of various ages and abilities. Many of the workshops that I conduct are reviving skills of a bygone era, so taking part in one of the workshops is to ensure that the skills of the past are not forgotten and we can enjoy them again and pass them onto the next generation. I have an online store where I sell my own patchwork & sewing designs in both written & PDF form, along with kits and sewing notions. My patterns are written for all levels of sewers and are supported with comprehensive instructions and diagrams so even the less experienced sewer can product a piece of art. My designs range from small to large items. I love to include applique (both blanket stitch and needle turn), Inktense colouring and embroidery/redwork in my designs. My quilts reflect this in their designs and many are available as BOM (block of the month) patterns or you can purchase the set of monthly patterns in one purchase. Well… sometimes things definitely do not go the way you imagine them in your head 😅🧶

While preparing the sample bunny for my new Amigurumi Crochet Course starting next week, I discovered that my “cute bunny” had developed a slight identity crisis…

First, Alyssa informed me that it looked like a dog.
Then a friend very kindly pointed out that it looked like a pig… apparently the pink nose wasn’t helping matters 🐷

So back to the drawing board I went.

First attempt at fixing it?
A nose job.

Sadly… the bunny was still questioning its life choices.

Which meant only one thing…

A full head transplant was required 😆

Cue lots of note taking, rewriting pattern instructions, crocheting an entirely new head, and producing a second sample bunny.

I’m still not entirely convinced I’ve created the world’s most perfect bunny… but at least it no longer resembles either a pig or a dog ... so I’m calling that progress 😂

I suppose this is your reminder that when something doesn’t work: ✨ don’t give up
✨ rethink the method
✨ make changes
✨ and try again

Because sometimes two heads really are better than one 🐰

Now I need honest opinions…

Does it finally look like a bunny? 👀

Monday morning again… and somehow we’ve arrived at the 1st of June already 😊

Today Alyssa and I are making another trip back to Ballyronan for a completely impromptu extra sewing class. When I was up there a couple of weeks ago, the ladies all asked if we could possibly come back for one more session as they were sad to see the course end ... and they also wanted to finish their zipped pouches 😊💛

Of course, Alyssa and I kindly agreed to return… and the fact that it also means another late lunch in the amazing wee café in Ballyronan had absolutely nothing to do with our decision whatsoever 😄

(Although honestly… the thought of French toast and fresh fruit may just have helped persuade us 😂)

Then on Wednesday evening it’s Week 2 of the Tunisian Crochet course, and after that it’s full steam ahead getting everything organised for our Craft Destash in Ballyronan on Saturday.

So… who is planning to come along to the Destash? 😊

And a little tip from me ... if you’re coming to Ballyronan on Saturday, The Scullery is open and I can highly recommend both their brunches and their sausage rolls 😄💛

What a lovely relaxing day we had today at the Blackwork workshop in Aghalee Village Hall 😊💛

We had a full class of ladies all learning the essential skills of reading a blackwork chart, counting the squares correctly, and transferring the design onto Aida fabric stitch by stitch.

One of the loveliest parts of the workshop was seeing how different each cottage became depending on the colour chosen. Traditionally blackwork would always have been stitched in black thread… but today we had cottages growing in cranberry, blue, stone, green, grey, gold and more.

Honestly, I still can’t decide which colourway is my favourite 😊
Some ladies are even planning to bring a second colour into their cottages, which I think will look absolutely beautiful and make each piece even more unique.

By the end of the workshop we had cottages at all different stages of being “built” ... some just beginning, others already well on their way ... and it was so lovely watching everyone settle into the rhythm of the stitching as confidence grew throughout the day.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, and especially to Aghalee Village Hall for inviting me to spend such a mindful, relaxing day stitching with such a lovely group of ladies 😊

One thing I hear all the time in workshops is…

“I can’t do this.”
“Mine looks awful.”
“I’ve ruined it.” 😄

And honestly? Almost every single person in the room says it at some stage.

Whether it’s knitting, crochet, embroidery, sewing, or blackwork ... learning something new can feel frustrating in the beginning, especially when your hands are trying to do something they’ve never done before.

But one of my favourite moments as a tutor is seeing that change happen.

The tight stressed stitches begin to relax.
The confusion starts making sense.
Confidence slowly appears.

And by the end of the class, the same person who was convinced they “couldn’t do it” is sitting proudly holding up something they made with their own hands 😊💛

That little moment never gets old.

And truly… I think creativity would be very boring if we all got everything perfect first time 😄

So now I’m curious… what creative skill did you once think was beyond you, but now absolutely love doing?

My little Intro to Blackwork flower kit was only ever available in traditional black 😊
That was simply how I always imagined blackwork should be ... classic black thread on light fabric.

But while preparing the Blackwork Cottage kits a few weeks ago, I started experimenting with different thread colours… and the response at the Quilt Fayre was such a lovely surprise. People absolutely loved choosing their own colourway 😊

So I decided the flower kit deserved the same little update 💛

And somehow calling them simply “green” or “purple” felt far too ordinary 😄 so each colourway now has its own name:

🌿 Woodland Bloom
🍓 Winter Berry
🖤 Traditional Blackwork
🌾 Soft Thistle
🌸 Foxglove Bloom
🌙 Midnight Garden

I love how each one changes the whole feel of the design.

The new colourways are now available on the website and there are currently limited numbers left from the Quilt Fayre before I restock 😊

So now I’m curious… do you prefer traditional blackwork stitched in classic black, or do you enjoy these softer modern colourways? 💛

So… instead of doing all the other jobs I probably should have been doing yesterday and today 😄 I decided it was finally time to tackle the mountain of beads, charms, findings, and “useful bits” that I’ve been buying over the past few months for the new curated handmade notion collections.

And when I say mountain… I really do mean mountain 😂

The kitchen table completely disappeared under boxes, bags, charms, beads, paperwork, collection notes, and little piles of “I forgot I even bought these!”

Alyssa helped by opening endless little bags and sorting charms into boxes while I started creating proper builder sheets for each collection so I actually know what belongs together, what notions each collection will include, and what theme/story ties them all together 😊💛

Honestly, it has been incredibly time consuming… but also strangely satisfying. I think I needed something that felt semi-creative yet still productive for a couple of days.

We also decided there were a few charms that no longer really fit the newer Nifty Needles style and direction, so these have now been bagged up ready for the Craft Destash in a few weeks… which means there are going to be some amazing little charm bargains there 👀😄

And while all of this was spread across the table so I could work properly… Jamie the cat decided that the absolute BEST place in the entire house to sleep was directly on top of the paperwork and boxes.

Not just once.
Both days 😂

Honestly, what is it with cats believing we deeply appreciate their furry supervision while trying to work? 😄💛

Please tell me I’m not the only one with a cat like Jamie!

Bank Holiday Monday… although there doesn’t seem to be much “holiday” happening behind the scenes at Nifty Needles 😄

This week’s main priority is finally finishing my sample for the upcoming Amigurumi course starting in two weeks time. As usual, I seem to have left it until the last minute because there has been so much else needing done first!

And of course, the moment Alyssa spotted me crocheting a bunny, she immediately decided she needed one for herself too 😂 So we’ve come to a compromise ... I’ll crochet the bunny, but she has to put it together and decorate it herself so I can take photos showing how everyone can personalise their own little bunny 😊💛

On Wednesday evening I’m starting Week 1 of the Tunisian Crochet course in Dungannon, which I’m really looking forward to, and then on Saturday it’s my Blackwork workshop in Aghalee.

In between classes there are still customer quilts waiting patiently beside the longarm, along with the ongoing mammoth task of updating the website and repackaging all the needlework notions to match the newer knitting and crochet packaging. Slowly but surely we’re getting there 😊

And because it’s the end of the month this week, that also means all the usual admin jobs, monthly reports, and getting the newsletter written and ready to send out.

So yes… just another fairly typical week at Nifty Needles 😄💛

Are you someone who leaves creative projects until the last minute… or do you always work well ahead of time? 😊

Some places leave a lasting mark on your heart… and Dan Winter's Cottage is certainly one of them 🤍

When we began planning a very special heritage fibre project, we found ourselves searching for a setting that truly captured the atmosphere, history and beauty of traditional making.

And immediately my thoughts returned to this remarkable cottage ... a place I had previously spent time teaching spinning beside the turf fire, surrounded by old tools, handmade history and the most incredible warmth and hospitality.

So we nervously asked if we could come & spend a day there photographing heritage crafts and fibre traditions… and not only were we welcomed with open arms, but homemade sodas were already cooking over the fire when we arrived ❤️

What followed was one of the most inspiring and memorable creative days imaginable.

Dan Winter’s Cottage is truly magical ... from the loom room and spinning wheels to the spirit grocers, whitewashed walls, worn stone floors and atmosphere of generations past, it genuinely feels like stepping back through centuries of history.

Thank you so much to Colin & Christine for welcoming us so warmly into such a special place 🧶✨

If you have never visited Dan Winter’s Cottage, it is absolutely worth experiencing for yourself.

For years, my little Learn Blackwork Flower kit only ever existed in one colour… traditional black 😊

And honestly, I never really questioned it. Blackwork had always been blackwork in my mind ... traditional, timeless, and rooted in history.

But over the past few months, while designing the new Blackwork Cottage and experimenting with different colourways for the kits, something interesting happened… people absolutely fell in love with the colour.

At the Quilt Fayre, I watched people carefully lifting the different shades, comparing them, holding them against the fabric, and choosing the one that “felt” right to them. It was lovely to see how much personality and atmosphere a simple change of thread colour could bring to a design.

And it made me look again at my little blackwork flower 😊 So I decided it was time to let it bloom beyond traditional black.

The design is now available in a collection of colourways with names that feel far more fitting than simple thread numbers:
🌿 Woodland Bloom
🍓 Winter Berry
🖤 Traditional Blackwork
🌾 Soft Thistle
🌸 Foxglove Bloom
🌙 Midnight Garden

I think each one changes the feel of the stitching completely ... some soft and delicate, others rich and dramatic.

The kits disappeared incredibly quickly at the Quilt Fayre (which still surprises me a little!), so there are only limited numbers of some colourways left on the website at the moment while I work on restocking.

And I think that’s the lovely thing about creativity… sometimes traditions evolve a little 😊💛
