If I Could Have You Back Today
Nannan, today is your birthday,
And my heart is breaking through,
Because all I really want today
Is to spend it here with you.
I want to walk through your door again,
And see your smiling face,
To hear your voice, to hold your hand,
To feel your warm embrace.
I wasn’t ready to lose you,
I don’t think I ever could be,
Because you weren’t just my Nannan,
You were a piece of me.
The world carried on without you,
But mine will never be the same,
There’s an emptiness inside my heart
Whenever I hear your name.
The grief is still so raw, Nannan,
Some days it hurts to breathe,
Because my head knows you have gone,
But my heart cannot believe.
There are moments I forget for a second,
And think you’re still somewhere near,
Then reality comes crashing back,
And I remember you’re not here.
I’d give anything for one more hug,
One conversation, one more day,
To tell you everything I should have said
Before you went away.
I hope you knew how loved you were,
