Barrow's docks were tidal sands.

On the Ordnance Survey map published in 1852, Barrow is still a village of a few hundred people beside the new Furness Railway. Barrow Island really is an island, and Salthouse and Roosecote Sands are covered by every tide.

Then came the iron boom. Devonshire Dock opened in 1867 in the channel behind the island, followed by Buccleuch Dock (1873) and Ramsden and Cavendish Docks (around 1879), tying the island to the town.

Today Barrow Island is home to the shipyard that builds Britain's submarines, and Cavendish Dock sits on the old sands.
