Antique Edwardian Satinwood Painted Carlton House Writing Desk c.1900

A charming and highly decorative Carlton House writing desk, combining warm golden satinwood with extensive hand-painted floral and classical decoration.

The raised U-shaped gallery incorporates two smaller drawers above a generous writing surface, with three further drawers arranged across the front.

Floral garlands, ribbon bows and trailing foliage decorate the desk throughout, while painted musical trophies appear to the sides and back - making this an especially attractive piece when positioned away from a wall.

Its compact proportions make it ideal for a bedroom, study, drawing room or home office where a larger desk might dominate the space.

Painted or inlaid? Which would you choose?

These two pieces show very different approaches to decorative antique furniture.

A — The painted demi-lune cabinet

Decorative, colourful and full of character.

B — The Edwardian mahogany inlaid compactum wardrobe

Grand, elegant and packed with beautiful marquetry.

Both create completely different effects.

Which is more your style — A or B?

Styling a statement antique bookcase

With a piece this detailed, less is definitely more.

As you can see in this visual, rather than filling every shelf try mixing books, ceramics, glassware and greenery with plenty of breathing space between them.

Against a softer neutral interior, the oak becomes the focal point without making the room feel overly traditional.

This is exactly the sort of way we love seeing larger antique furniture used today.

The full reveal đź‘€

After sharing a few close-up details earlier, here is the complete piece.

An impressive carved quarter sawn oak bookcase/display cabinet with exceptional scale and presence, featuring bowed glazed side sections, central glazed doors and richly carved Renaissance Revival-style decoration throughout.

The carving is what really makes this piece, the masks, scrolling foliage, fruit, classical ornament and heavily worked lower cupboard doors all give it incredible character.

A serious statement piece and one that looks even better in person.

Now available at Hawkins Antiques.

Sneak peek at one of this week’s new arrivals 👀

We collected this impressive quarter sawn oak bookcase earlier this week and it’s now ready to be photographed and listed.

We couldn’t resist sharing a few details first. The carving is superb, with lion masks, scrolling foliage, carved faces and richly worked oak throughout.

We’ll share the full piece later today.

Detail of the Day

Porcelain Plaques

A closer look at the painted porcelain plaques on this richly decorated French bonheur du jour.
Set against the warm veneers and gilt-metal mounts, the porcelain adds colour, contrast and an extra level of refinement to the design.
It’s these smaller decorative elements that give French furniture so much character.
Porcelain detail….yes or no?

Antiques in Modern Homes

One of the biggest misconceptions about antique furniture is that it only works in traditional interiors.

In this room we’ve combined several pieces from our current collection, the dining table and chairs, display cabinet, chest of drawers, wall prints and wall lights with a light, neutral interior.

The result is warm, elegant and full of character, without feeling overly formal.

We love seeing how antique furniture can completely change the feel of a modern room.

Antique French Kingwood & Mahogany Gilt Bronze Vitrine Display Table c.1890

A highly decorative French vitrine display table dating from circa 1890.

The piece combines kingwood and mahogany with an exceptionally decorative scheme of gilt-bronze floral garlands and mounts.

Its shaped glazed top lifts to reveal a fitted display compartment beneath, making it ideal for presenting jewellery, porcelain, silver or other treasured objects.

The slender legs and refined proportions prevent the piece from feeling visually heavy, while the rich gilt-bronze decoration gives it plenty of presence.

A lovely example of late 19th-century French decorative furniture that could work equally well in a drawing room, hallway, bedroom or sophisticated contemporary interior.
