Hornets. They live about here every year. Never a problem really. Once we left the lights on, with the back door open and got several caught in the house. We managed to chaperone all of them out…. or so we thought.
Later that evening a loud humming buzz rose up from behind us on the sofa…. ‘The one that escaped!’ Impossible to remove.
Ended up with me inside in the dark with the window open and Nick out in the garden with a torch. Ingenious! Our plan worked.
Gotta love a hornet! All wildlife welcome here!

On hot, sticky evenings we get round to processing some dried flowers. Tonight’s job was wiring the strawflowers. All good to go for buttonholes and other wedding or specialist jobs.

Flower Club July subscription.
Seasonal best on field blooms and foliage for you to play and create with at home.

Just made a cool evening cut of a selection of the best flowers and foliage on the field right now.
This week’s challenge is colour combos and we’ve added in some lovely structural and textured flowers and foliage too.
Bold coloured dahlias are just coming in pinks and deep reds, zinnias, sweet scented snaps in pastel colours (reminds me of ice cream), scabious, malope, achillea and tansy. Textured seed pods of the crocismia, ammi, dill and orach for all the textures. I learnt recently orach is another name for the Carribean vegetable Callaloo - happy to be corrected if this is wrong.

Really can’t wait to see what all our flowers are made into.
Will post creations in stories over the next couple of weeks if I’m sent pics 😉

This is the perfect time to cut and gather flowers for drying.

1. Cut first thing before the heat or after the heat of the day has gone in the evening. (Use clean snips 😉)

2. Condition overnight in cool water- somewhere as cool as possible.

3. Next evening /morning when your flowers have had a good drink, bunch up and hang from a ceiling (now I’m not suggesting that you should go out and buy chicken wire for your ceilings but that’s what we use, in the main, in dark rooms, with good airflow) a wire or string line also work well, hooks etc
4) Rubber bands are better than tying up as the stems will shrink and you’ll get droppage! Homemade wire hooks or string will work for attaching your bunches to the drying hanger.

5. Experiment. Have fun with what you choose to dry - flowers, seed pods, grasses. Dahlias, dry very well when picked at the right time so am trying to do more of that this year. Someone asked me for dried sunflowers last year so I’ll experiment with that too.

6. Flowers ready to store anything from 2-8 weeks. Then store in newspaper/ tissue paper. In a box to use whenever you feel like creating.
