The morning after Ally Pally!

Knit + Stitch closed its doors at Alexandra Palace yesterday, and we suspect a fair few suitcases came home heavier than they went.

So, whether you were there or followed along enviously from the sofa: what's the one skein you couldn't walk away from this autumn?

(If London wasn't on the cards, our A-frame is out on Walcot Street most days. The queue is considerably shorter.)

Ever seen a jumper and thought "but what yarn is that, how much did they use, and would it suit me?"

Our Finished Knits page answers all three.

While we do have some finished knits in-store, the largest catalogue is online. It's a gallery of dozens of real projects, all knitted by our team: jumpers, cardigans, shawls, tees, socks and more. Tap any card and it flips over to show you:

✔️ the pattern and designer
✔️ every yarn and colourway used, with a link to each
✔️ exactly how many skeins it took
✔️ the size knitted, and an honest note from the knitter

And we do mean honest. Susan admits her Haluby went "a bit too big". Vanessa's short rows became a "personalised design feature". Carmen's Good Grampa cardigan has buttonholes and buttons, but the two haven't met yet.

You'll find mohair held with sequins, silk tees for summer, Fluff paired with hand-dyed yarns, and plenty of combinations you might not have thought to try. As one of our knitters puts it, the pattern is your canvas and the yarn is your paint.

Knit Night is tomorrow 🙌

Tuesday 6th October, 7-9pm, here at the shop on Walcot Street. Bring whatever's on your needles - a first scarf, a stubborn sleeve, the cardigan that's been waiting for buttons since spring - and come and knit in good company.

It's very informal. No skill level required, no agenda, nothing to sign up for. Just a warm room, some knitting and a good deal of chatting. If you get stuck on something, there's usually someone nearby who's been stuck on it before.

Come for the whole evening or just pop in for an hour. We'd love to see you.

How are we already in October?!

The hand knits are finally out of the cupboard, and I'm counting down to Rhinebeck. Will I finish the sweater I meant to wear? Absolutely not. Such is the life of a yarn shop owner!

But this week I want to talk about something else.

I've been loving Taylor Swift's new music. I can't comment on the musical technicalities, but I can comment on this: a lot of the negative commentary seems to come down to her success, and in particular her success as a woman.

I am so tired of the story that when women are successful, they're too successful. Too much somehow. The space they take up makes people uncomfortable. I call bullsh*t.

It happens in our industry all the time. All the time. Reddit, Instagram and TikTok are full of criticism of designers and yarn makers who have become too popular, too successful, basically taking up too much space.

How about we simply celebrate it? A woman became that popular and that successful, and that is utterly amazing and wonderful. I want to see more of it, especially from other women.

So here are some of the brilliant women I'm lucky to call friends. Founders, leaders and makers, every one of them taking up exactly the space they deserve. 💛

For years, our samples have lived on the rails and in the window on Walcot Street: jumpers, shawls, hats and socks, knitted to show what a yarn could do. Many of those yarns have since been discontinued, so these pieces can never be made again. On the night, every one of them goes on sale. One-offs, never worn, and gone for good once they're gone. If you're in the room, you get first pick.

Before that, we'll show them around the pool, styled with wardrobe staples from local Bath brands. That's how we actually get dressed: a hand-knitted jumper over a shirt you've had for years.

Your ticket includes two drinks and time to wander the Baths after hours.

Bring someone who doesn't knit. This evening is as much about clothes and wearing what you like with confidence as it is about knitting. Nobody needs to know a purl from a knit.

Every ticket supports Voices a Bath charity providing recovery support and advocacy to people affected by domestic abuse.
