Sometimes the painting underneath is the one you have to destroy to find the one that’s meant to stay.

This one has been through a lot.

Over a year of adding, taking away, scraping back and starting again.

I had no end point in mind. I just kept responding to what was happening on the canvas.

That willingness to keep destroying and rebuilding is probably the biggest part of my process.

Eventually, you reach that moment where you stop questioning it.

It just gets there.

This is where this one landed.

There’s a lot underneath this one.

This painting has been sitting in my studio for over a year, quietly refusing to be finished.

I painted over it. Scraped it back. Changed direction. Covered parts I loved. Started again.

Layers of completely different paintings are still underneath what you see here.

For me, making work is about having the willingness to keep destroying and rebuilding until something finally feels right.

There was never a plan for this one. No image I was trying to create.

Just a feeling I was trying to find.

And eventually, I found it.

Made to be lived with not just looked at.

These two have sat in my studio for over a year.

Started. Reworked. Scraped back. Painted over. Changed completely. Then changed again.

There are layers and layers of completely different paintings underneath these final versions. At times, neither of them felt right enough to finish.

But I think there’s a real willingness in my process to keep destroying and rebuilding - to let go of what’s there, even when you’ve already invested so much into it, and trust that something better might be underneath.

So I stopped trying to make them right.

I just kept going until they settled somewhere that felt like me.

No end goal. No perfect plan. Just a feeling.

If you’re new here… hi! 👋 I’m Nic, the artist behind Absolutely Hanging.

A few years ago, I was working in corporate marketing, but there was always a part of me that knew I wanted to create art for a living. It felt like a huge leap at the time, but it’s one I’m so grateful I took.

Now I spend my days creating original paintings that find their way into people’s homes, where they become part of family stories, celebrations, memories and everyday life. I honestly couldn’t ask for a better job.

In my opinion, better than a photograph.

Not because it’s more accurate, but because it captures something a camera can’t. The feeling.

The salty air. The dark sand beneath tiny feet. The freedom of childhood. The age they were. The moment in time.

My boys are already bigger than they were when this photograph was taken.

And that’s exactly why I painted it.

Because sometimes the most precious thing about a painting isn’t what it looks like….. it’s what it lets you keep.

A little piece of a memory.

A way of keeping them small forever. 🤍

I’m slightly obsessed with painting those little everyday moments that dog lovers instantly recognise. Anyone else have a spaniel that walks exactly like this?
