Sic et Non
I’ve always been fascinated by the sheer mastery of the Old Masters. This painting is my way of bringing the solemnity of Romanesque and Gothic art into conversation with abstraction.
I experimented with a deliberate split: the intense figures and narrative on one side, and abstract ancient scripts on the other. The key is the title, referencing Peter Abelard’s Sic et Non (Yes and No)—a call to confront contradiction. The canvas becomes a place for philosophical debate, asking: What question are these seven figures debating?
It’s a rewarding challenge to work with both tempera and oil; the materials demand patience but yield such a beautiful, layered depth.
