Last call for the Intarsia workshop this year 🦊

I'm running it one more time on Thursday 19 November, 6:30 to 9pm here at Hanks Yarn Parlour in Belfast. If you missed the other dates, this is genuinely your last chance before 2027.

Intarsia is the technique where you knit actual pictures into your fabric, using separate bobbins for each block of colour. No stranding across the back, no previous colourwork experience needed, just comfortable knit and purl. We'll make a hot water bottle cover with the most dashing little fox face on it, which is a very good thing to have in your house come January.

Yarn, pattern, tea and biscuits are all included. Bring your own 4.5mm or 5mm straight needles. Max 8 students, so it does fill up.

Okay so it's Socktober. For anyone not deep in the sock knitting rabbit hole — it's the entirely unofficial community challenge where we collectively pretend we're going to knit at least one pair of socks in October and then panic. I'm in. I'm always in.

This year I went down a Ravelry spiral and ended up with five patterns I genuinely cannot choose between. So naturally I made a reel about it instead of just picking one and getting on with it.

First up: Cottage Pumpkin Patch Set by Stone Knits. Stranded colourwork, pumpkin motifs, top-down with a heel flap, two patterns in one AND an optional Jack-o'lantern chart. I have no explanation for my choices, but here we are. Then there's Rib It Socks by Celine Feyten, which has a heel construction called the Kite Heel that gives you all the fit of a heel flap and gusset without picking up stitches. Intrigued and slightly terrified.

Unravel Memories by Zanete Knits is named after the Farnham fibre festival and the colourwork is vibrant and joyful — toe-up, all-over stranded, total statement sock. Winding Way from Tin Can Knits (one of my absolute favourite designers, always) is a lace sock inspired by Edinburgh's medieval stone staircases — stunning, and if you know TCK you'll understand immediately. And Socks Casper by Olya Kilic — tiny ghost colourwork, mid-calf, cuff down. Called Casper. That is all.

Okay I need to talk about this new Inspiring Yarns batch because WOW 🍂

A fresh load just arrived and the autumnal colourways are absolutely everything. These are dyed locally and I am always a little too excited when their yarn lands on my doorstep — this batch is no exception.

This Thursday is Stitch & Stash and honestly, if you need an excuse to put down everything and just sit with your yarn for a couple of hours — this is it. 🧶

Socktober is here and I am not going to pretend this isn't my favourite excuse to run a sock yarn sale.

Commercially dyed sock yarns and kits are 10% off when you're buying 1–2 skeins, and 15% off if you're going for 3 or more. Stack them. You know you want to.

Right, who's been avoiding colourwork because the back of their work looks like a tangled nightmare? Same. Or at least, it used to be same, until I figured out ladderback jacquard and honestly it changed everything.

Ladderback jacquard is basically a way of taming those long floats in stranded knitting so your fabric still stretches properly instead of being all rigid and weird. It looks fancy but it's genuinely not complicated once you see it done — and that's exactly what I'll be teaching on Wednesday 4 November, 7–9pm.

You'll also learn a Turkish cast-on as a provisional cast-on, which sounds intimidating but I promise it's one of those things that's way easier than you think.

The project is your choice of a beanie or a cowl with a geometric gnome/gonk pattern (very seasonal, very cute). Yarn is included in the price — you just need to bring 16" circular needles in 4–4.5mm (or whatever you normally use for DK) plus a second circular needle for the cast-on (can be the same size or smaller).

£30 for the session, materials included, max 8 people. You should be comfortable knitting in the round, and ideally you've had a go at stranded colourwork before — but no ladderback jacquard experience needed at all, I'll teach it from scratch.
