ASTRL Fibres

ASTRL Fibres Rooted in craft. Shaped by curiosity. ASTRL Fibres explores the heritage skills of macramé, passementerie, bespoke braids & cords. Rooted in Craft.

Browse objects and artworks, DIY kits and workshops ~ an invitation to bring slow and intentional craft into your everyday. Shaped by Curiosity. Alison Pascoe is a fibre artist, craftsperson, tutor and the founder of ASTRL Fibres ~ a Belfast studio dedicated to heritage craft skills, established in 2016. Her practice lives in the space between art and functionality using traditional macramé, passe

menterie, braiding and cord weaving techniques. Explore handcrafted objects and artworks that embody a playful sense of place and storytelling. For Alison, craft is more than just a skill ~ it’s a mindful practice, a powerful form of connection, expression and a grounding way of thinking with your hands in a virtual age. In 2024 she was awarded a training bursary from the Heritage Crafts to undertake 1:1 training in passementerie, with leading passementerie artist Elizabeth Ashdown, alongside ply-split braiding with Julie Hedges and traditional Japanese braidmaking, or Kumihimo. With only a handful of artists across the UK and Ireland practicing passementerie, she is among a rare few committed to keeping this endangered skill alive and sharing it with new audiences. Alongside her creative practice, Alison is an experienced tutor and community arts facilitator, running workshops, short courses and 1:1 tuition. The ASTRL Fibres studio is nestled on the Woodstock Road ~ a lovingly curated shopfront space and working artist studio, learning hub and consultation space in the heart of East Belfast. Designed to feel like a pause ~ an intentional step out of the hectic rush of everyday life. Whether you are joining a workshop, booking a 1:1 session or exploring a commission, you will find a relaxed and welcoming space to connect, slow down and think with your hands. Down tools interlude

Wrapped up a huge project and took advantage of the school break for some good times spent in the company of my favourite people. It was all wind & rainbows, high drama vistas, muddy boots, a whiff of spring and some little treats.

Back to the studio on Monday 💚

Thinking with your hands…

It’s a phrase I keep coming back to ~ the idea that your hands know the next step before your brain does.

My current big project has been planned, calculated, and mapped out in extensive detail. Yes that groundwork matters, but beyond all the preparation there’s a moment where something shifts. The planning fades and flow takes over. You stop deciding and start feeling ~ the tension of the cord, the rhythm of the pattern, your fingers leading before your mind has caught up.

That’s not muscle memory. That’s a whole other kind of intelligence. One that reveals itself loop by loop, in real time, through the making itself. 🪢

Read The Language of Knots…

In case you didn’t know I’ve been writing a blog/newsletter over on Substack. The Language of Knots is a space to share my discoveries: the sometimes overlooked, obscure and endangered practices that make up a diverse history of handmade culture. I’ll delve into projects and process, thinking with my hands using a range of textile and fibre craft skills, and the creative digressions and inspirations that drive my practice.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in reading then head to the link in my bio.

I pressed send on my latest post this week, it’s all about the fascinating craft of ply-split braiding ~ how it started for me and what I’ve discovered along the way.

There’s no paywall, which is sometimes an annoying thing on Substack, so you can read the latest post and my full archive for free and at your leisure. Hit subscribe or sign up on my website and future posts will go straight to your inbox as and when I write them, which is only occasionally I promise.

The start of my biggest project yet…

I’m scaling up, making room, using every inch of my studio space and clearing my calendar. Have to keep this one on the down low for now, but stay tuned for updates…

Bespoke Plant Hangers • Portobello Rd • London

Last week while I was in London I had the chance to re-visit and the big custom project of 28 plant hangers I completed for them last year. The plant hangers were designed for the low beamed ceiling of the first floor dining space, to create a lush overhead plant oasis without getting in the way of diners.

The brief was to create a unique collection using natural colours and textures, with a few accent shades and individual details, to fit into the warm rustic aesthetic of the space.

The plant hangers needed to have a short drop and no bottom fringe so I turned to basket weaving and traditional knot craft for inspiration and worked all my hangers from the bottom up!

It was a big project, each plant hanger designed and handcrafted in my Belfast studio, one by one, then sent to London in batches. Until this recent visit I’d never seen them all together and installed for their intended purpose, so thrilled with the result! What do you think?

If you’re in London definitely give a visit, the food is unreal, the design is stunning and the vibes solid! Thanks to Ryan, Matthew and Nick for giving me the opportunity. 💚

Hit me up if you’ve got a space that needs some bespoke texture and elevated vibes.

Another week in London and 4 full days spent with further immersing myself in the rare and remarkable world of passementerie!

Libby is a fantastic teacher with a contagious passion and wealth of knowledge for this endangered craft. I’m so very grateful for her generosity and for the support from .ni for making this recent trip possible.

This time round was all about the loom! We revisited some of the basics covered in our previous sessions (very helpful as I’m still getting used to this weaving business) explored new techniques such as adding supplemental warps to build up ornate layers and how to create more advanced tassel and bullion fringe trims. Also had a really good technical chat about suitable looms and how passementerie looms are truly bespoke and by no means a standard design!

Also did a fair bit of chillin’ in the hammock of my stunning Brixton studio loft accommodation, some wandering on, and beneath, the busy streets of central London and even managed to check out the incredible Mrinalini Mukherjee and her circle exhibition at the

January. Finished a project, started a project, enjoyed some frosty walks, caught a nasty cold and subsequently spent plenty of time in my sick bed reading new books.

Finally got round to attempting the phone bag with strap from one of Julie Hedges books, Ply Split Braiding - Further Techniques. I’m well pleased with the result, proof that my practice with the grip fid over the past few months has really improved my skills.

This bag will now live in my studio and hopefully solve a problem with forever misplacing my phone!

This time next week you’ll find me at the Portview Christmas Market December 20th from 12-4pm. In the meantime I’ve been stocking up on the little things for all you last minute shoppers…

This year my key/bag charms have had a mega revamp. Made with hand spun cord by moi (in loads of different colourways) using the beautiful ply-split braiding technique I’ve been learning this year.

A solid handmade gift idea!
