Homebuilding TV programmes have been a popular source of entertainment for decades - occasionally for the wrong reasons. While many offer inspiration and guidance, the shows regularly feature cautionary tales of extended delays and increased budgets. This article highlights how your Architect can utilise advancements in technology to mitigate potential pitfalls and make the homebuilding process less daunting.

My name is Tara Lamb and I have been running LAM Architects since 2018. We are passionate about delivering ambitious projects on time and on budget. One of the main tools we use to achieve this is 3D technology.

Communication has always been a key role of the Architect; empowering collaboration essential for a successful project. However, gone are the days of the unapproachable architect hunched over a drawing board producing blueprints that are often misinterpreted until onsite.

Government projects must now be produced using 3D technology and most Architects have had to dive into the digital world by necessity. This offers huge benefits to the homeowner as Architects now have the means to efficiently and effectively describe complex ideas in an understandable way. Clients can visualise their new home before construction begins.

The TV programmes highlight how projects often lose track of time and budget due to changes while in construction (that is excluding pregnancies). While an Architect cannot assist with the latter, hiring the right Architect can mitigate delays on site and soaring costs by utilising 3D technology from the outset – and hopefully avoid the rolling eye contempt of the programme host, let’s call him Devin McFog.

3D technology allows the homeowner to visualise and understand our ideas immediately and realistically in a way that traditional 2D drawings or even 3D models never could. This has facilitated rapid design amendments and earlier planning submissions but, more importantly, allows you to feel comfortable about ambitious design solutions leading to a superior final home…. Crucially, the understanding that 3D technology provides can ensure more of the project is resolved before construction begins, leading to less changes on site, avoiding cost and time delays.

Our brief for this project was to design a four bedroom dwelling with a separate garage. It is single story, with plenty of storage and a strong connection to well designed and orientated outdoor areas

Our brief for this project was to design a family home surrounded by vast rural beauty. We were asked to draw upon the traditional style of rural dwellings to inspire form, scale, materiality, and configuration of buildings, but also provide a cutting-edge design.

This refurbishment project is well under way on site so we thought we would give you a sneak peak of the design concept. Like many of these Victorian terrace houses in Belfast this tired 5 bed house had lost all its charm and was not making the most of its good bones! Our client gave us free reign to let our creative juices flow (within a budget obviously) so we decided to inject a serious amount of character and style in and we are so excited to see it come to life.
