TOP SECRET!! 🤫📕

Did you know Derwentside Shopping Mill, also known as Unity Mill played an important role in the 2nd World War? 🏭

Unity Mill was used in the 1940's by Rolls-Royce and during World War 2 parts of the Rolls-Royce operations were relocated to Belper as it was deemed a safer place, as the Rolls-Royce Aero Drawing Office in Derby had become a potential target from the opposition. 📒 ✏

Unity Mill was one of the buildings used for this project, and some of the drawings for the iconic Rolls-Royce Merlin Engine we're produced here. ✈

The Merlin - which powered both the Spitfire and the Hurricane - is often credited as a decisive factor in the allied air effort of the war.

Records from this period are limited for security reasons, but we do have surviving photo's from within the mill, that show the drawing office at its full capacity. 📷

One of our very talented traders Claire Murray from within the Mill did a fantastic oil pastel drawing of what the mill would look like with the Spitfire plane flying over the Mill for us, which is proudly hung in the foyer of the mill.

A fascinating piece of history right here in Belper! 🤫

📍 Larkins, Derwentside Shopping Mill

Did you know Derwentside Shopping Mill — also known as Unity Mill — once had a side hustle making bread? 🍞

And, well… let’s just say Greggs had nothing to worry about. 😂

Back in 1868, the good people running the local workhouse thought they had solved a simple problem:
👉 “We need bread. Hire a baker.”
Enter Messrs. Nickisson & Smith, Bread Contractors at Unity Mill.
Contracts were signed. Prices agreed. Bread delivered.
What could possibly go wrong?

Quite a lot, as it turned out. 😬
The complaints started rolling in.
Mr Spendlove, the returning officer — clearly a man who took his bread VERY seriously — discovered that the loaves were 2 to 2½ ounces lighter than they were supposed to be.

And worse…
The bread wasn't even up to “good seconds” quality.
Basically, Victorian workhouse speak for:

“This bread is absolutely rubbish.” 😂

Nickisson & Smith explained that they were using half “seconds” flour and half household flour and promised to improve things.
Unfortunately, the inmates had already delivered their own review:
⭐ 1/5 — Would not eat again.
Some apparently couldn't eat the bread at all.
Even the Master of the Workhouse agreed it was bad.
So the Guardians examined it themselves.
And unanimously concluded that it was…
EVEN WORSE THAN THE OTHER BAD BREAD. 🤣
At this point, Unity Mill's bread had achieved something remarkable:
🍞 It had united an entire committee.
Against bread.
The Board decided enough was enough and cancelled the contract.
The higher Poor Law Board, meanwhile, offered the incredibly helpful solution:
“If it's bad, just send it back.”

One can only imagine a horse and cart trundling back to Unity Mill carrying 90 deeply offended loaves of bread. 😂
Eventually, the Guardians tasted the bread themselves — brave men indeed — and confirmed that it was officially deficient in quality.
So…
🍞 90 loaves returned
💰 Cost deducted from the baker's bill
📜 Contract cancelled
⚖️ Bread scandal concluded
And just to make absolutely certain this culinary disaster never happened again, a new rule was introduced:
All contractors had to provide proper weights when delivering bread.
And thus ended the Great Unity Mill Workhouse Bread Scandal of 1868
