This is where the work begins.

Stripping a chair like this back is not a quick job - and it shouldn't be. You find out a lot about a piece when you get into it. How it was originally built, where it needs attention, what has to be done properly before anything goes back on.

A frame like this - delicate, with gold leaf edging that could be a century old - has to be stripped with real care. The old fabric comes off, the back comes out completely, and then the whole thing is rebuilt from the frame up. There's no shortcut worth taking on a piece like this. Do it properly at this stage, or you'll see it in the finished chair.

Stephen, our upholsterer, has been doing this for over 40 years. He knows exactly what he's looking at - and more importantly, he knows exactly what he's doing.

A close up of the velvet - because a photograph on a screen only gets you so far with a fabric like this.

In person, the depth of it stops you. The pile, the pattern, the way the surface shifts as the light moves across it - a cut velvet damask changes depending on where you're standing, what time of day it is, how the light falls. Which is, if you think about it, exactly what you want from a fabric on a chair you're going to live with. It doesn't give everything up at once.

Fadini Borghi. Made in Italy. Worth every bit of the consideration that went into choosing it.

This is the fabric we chose. A cut velvet damask by Fadini Borghi.

The depth of the cut pile, the way the pattern holds, the weight of it in your hands - this is Italian mastercraft at its best. Fadini Borghi's weaving heritage reaches back to the 13th century, when Italy introduced silk weaving to Europe. It was the French who eventually brought those skills across the Alps - Italian weavers were deliberately enticed to set up in Lyon and Tours, and it was that tradition that would later dress the court at Versailles.

So not French, as such. The best of it started in Italy.

For a chair like this, the fabric needed to bring the same quality as the frame itself. Something that could hold its own against a piece with that much character. This does that.

Before we started, this is where we were.

A beautiful antique Louis baroque chair - the proportions exactly right, the frame absolutely worth saving. The original fabric, though, had no real connection to the chair at all. It had never done the piece justice.

This is the kind of project we enjoy. Over the next two weeks, we'll take you through the whole process - from here to the finished chair.

The Aura Stripe from James Hare's Artissima Collection is one of those fabrics that earns its place in a scheme.

It's a bold, contemporary take on linear pattern. Clean stripes blended with softly blurred, hand-painted ikat forms, so there's movement in it, depth in it. Not just a stripe.

Expertly printed in England with an impressive rub test, it works just as beautifully on upholstery as it does at the window.

The Artissima Collection is available to view at our showroom on North Bar Within, Beverley. Pop in and see it for yourself - there's a difference between looking at a fabric online and holding it in your hands under the right light.

From bare frame to finished chair. This is how a Lugano is made.

Every Lugano that leaves our Beverley workshop goes through Steve's hands. Frame first. Then the springs. Webbing and foam next. And finally the fabric, pulled and pinned until it's exactly right.

The Lugano actually started life as a dining chair. About 15 years ago, a client from Mayfair asked for something more generous - a deeper seat, a wider frame, a chair you could really settle into. We re-worked the proportions, and that became the Lugano. We've made countless of them since.

The pictures show it in Jane Churchill's Kilver - a folk-inspired print with the feel of a gently worn antique Persian carpet, rich in colour and texture. Beautiful fabric on a classic chair.

We have a Lugano in the showroom at the moment, upholstered in Jane Churchill's Cleo - an animal spot velvet that couldn't be more different in mood. Worth popping in just to sit in it, get a feel for the shape and the depth of the seat.

Not keen on either fabric? That's the whole point. We can make yours in whatever cloth you choose, and change the leg colour too. The one in the pictures has walnut legs - but that's just one option.

This is a scheme we've put together here in our showroom.

We started with an embroidered fabric. Added tassel fringing for texture and movement. Pulled Zoffany paint colours from the weave itself, then brought in a coordinate fabric for the pelmets to tie it all together. Every element chosen with the full picture in mind.

The weight of the fabric, the way the fringing catches the light, how the paint sits alongside it - these are the things that make a scheme work, and they're the reasons we put displays like this together. So you can see exactly how everything sits before any decisions are made.
