The Lugano chair sitting in our showroom right now is upholstered in Jane Churchill's Cleo - an animal spot velvet. Deep, tactile, a bit glamorous. Totally different to the Kilver we showed you in the making post. Same chair. Very different mood.

This fabric must be seen rather than described. And once you're in the chair, you'll understand why the Lugano started life as a request - a client who wanted something with a deeper seat and a frame you actually want to spend time in.

Two fabrics that just work together.

The curtains are in Lamballe - leaves and flowers climbing a stem, the tones shifting depending on where the light falls. The chair in Odile - narrow stripes with a trailing bud running through them. Different in character, but they sit comfortably side by side.

It's right there on the frame if you look closely.

Parker Knoll.

Founded 1869. Royal commissions. The RMS Queen Mary. The BBC. A name people saved up for - not because they were told to, but because they'd seen one in someone's house and knew. That's a different kind of wanting.

The polished wood came back from dark to light - back to its original teak. That decision alone changed how the chair sits in the room. And then GP & J Baker's Tetbury went on. Spruce colourway. Understated enough to live with every day - and still catching your eye six months later.

This is what re-upholstery actually looks like before it looks like anything at all.

Hundreds of staples out. Foam that had long since given up. And underneath it - a frame that's still completely solid. That's the thing about furniture that was made properly. Strip it right back and it still holds.

Most people only see the finished chair. They don't see this part - the hours of work before a single piece of new fabric goes near it. We don't skip it. You can't, not if you want the result to last.

Now - does anyone recognise the make?

It's a well-known British name. One people genuinely saved up for. Drop your answer in the comments - we'll reveal it, and the finished result, in our next post.

You get home. Draw the curtains. Switch on the overhead light.

And then you notice it - that flatness. The room that looked perfectly fine in August, when the light was doing most of the work. Same room. Doesn't feel the same.

Lighting is the thing people sort last. It should probably be the first.

A good lamp doesn't just add light. It adds layers - a pool of warmth in one corner, something to draw the eye, a reason to stay in the room rather than drift elsewhere. Done properly, the room just feels right.

Coral and sage, flamestitch weave - new in the showroom.

We've just finished upholstering this sofa table here in our Beverley workshop, in Colefax & Fowler's Dexter fabric. That flamestitch pattern - bold zigzag gradations woven from a wide palette of coloured yarns - shifts quite beautifully depending on the light. Striking without overwhelming, if that makes sense.

Made and finished by us. £485.

We've installed curtains across the UK, into Europe, and as far as the Caribbean. When you're travelling that kind of distance to hang curtains in someone's home, care and attention aren't optional. It's a long way to come back.

But here's what I find myself thinking about more often than the distance: it isn't the miles that focus the mind. It's having seen, over the years, what happens when installation is treated as the easy part.

I've lost count of the times I've arrived at a job - our own, or one we've been called in to sort out - and found tracks that were never right for the window they were specified for. Motors not rated to carry the weight of the curtains hanging from them. Runners that make operating them harder than it should be, not easier.

One job stays with me. A bay window, a corded track, and the wrong runners fitted - corded at one end only, as it turned out. The client had been hanging his full body weight off the track just to get it to move. We sorted it, and I'm glad we did. But I still can't entirely explain how that track was ever signed off in the first place.

That kind of error doesn't happen at Carol Bird Interiors. Not because we're infallible, but because the people doing the installation understand curtains - the weight, the mechanism, the load, the movement - and they've been doing this long enough to know what right looks like before anything goes up.

Installation is where all the work that came before it either proves itself or falls apart. A curtain designed with care, made with skill, and hung incorrectly is a disappointment. The whole point is that it shouldn't be.

We've just taken in the new passementerie collection from James Hare, and it's well worth a look if you're thinking about a room at the moment.

Braids, fringes and bobble trims - each one designed to coordinate with the James Hare silk range. And they do that beautifully. But we've also been putting them alongside linens, velvets, plains and wools, and they sit just as comfortably there. More versatile than you might expect.

Trimmings are one of those things that tend to get left until last - and then, when you see them on, you wonder why you didn't think about them sooner.

The Layla Mirror - now in the showroom at £350.
