Magpie & Hook is a modern craft shop, haberdashery and teaching studio in Bideford, N. Devon

We offer a contemporary spin to traditional crafts and many of the products we stock are recycled or sustainably produced. Magpie & Hook is a combination of two existing businesses: The Magpie's Nest & The Left Hookery. In January 2022, Magpie & Hook opened in their new home on Mill Street, Bideford.

On Saturday 14th November we have our next workshop with Tony R Maker (sewing bee finalist) we will be making his Tony Shirt. We have run this class a few times already and we got fantastic results as shown in the photographs.
Tony is a great tutor and our classes with him are always a lot of fun. This is a full day class : 10 - 4.30pm : it is priced at £100, you will also need a copy of the pattern (£20) around 2.5m of cotton fabric, buttons, thread and interfacing. You need to bring your own sewing machine ( i can lend you one if you don't have one)

Come and crochet a pumpkin with me!
Wednesday 28th October : 11 -1pm : £20
all materials included, you do need to have crocheted before for this session.

We just have an evening Woolly Wednesday group this week as if is half-term and very busy in the shop.
Social crafting group : 6.30 - 8 30pm : £5 per person: refreshments included. No need to book : just bring along your crafty project and craft with like minded friends

New fabrics, we have had some lovely new fabrics in.
Black denim : £20 per metre
Dark grey bengaline : £10 per metre
Soft blue stitched cotton : £15 per metre
Navy & orange woven cotton : £20 per metre

The black denim is perfect for the Roan barrel jeans we made at the last Tony R Maker workshop.
The bengaline is a stretch fabric and would make lovely trousers or skirts.
The soft stitched cotton is really nice, great for tops or dresses, so soft and pretty.
The navy woven fabric is absolutely gorgeous and would make a beautiful shirt dress or blouse.

Pop in for a look! We have some gorgeous fabrics for quilting and dressmaking and we pride ourselves on the quality and eco credentials of our fabrics, many of our fabrics are organic and most are also OEKO-TEX standard, meaning they are better for the environment, using safer dyes and less water during manufacture.

We also have interfacing, wadding, patterns, zips and two new Gutermann stands full of beautiful sewing threads

***New Workshop***
Tuesday 27th October : 7 - 9pm
Plaster relief plaques with Karly from La di dah pottery.
£35 +£5 for materials

Come along to this fun workshop with Karly, where we will learn to make plaster relief plaques. Karly and me had a great time practicing this workshop and I'm sure you will love it too.
You can use natural materials like leaves, poppy heads, flowers or a selection of spooky items to make Halloween decorations that can be displayed year on year.

So tomorrow is a treble whammy at Magpie & Hook!
Woolly Wednesday is at 11am - 1pm and 6.30 - 8.30pm. This our weekly crafty social, just bring along your project in progress or start something new. £5 per person : refreshments provided. This is not a teaching session, just a social meeting up.

Sewing with Steph is also on, 6.30 - 8.30pm. This is a teaching session, Steph is a very experienced dress maker and was a textiles teacher for many years. Bring along your sewing project and Steph can help you with your project. This session is priced at £30 : refreshments are included. You need to book for this session.

As you may have noticed HALLOWEEN is my favourite thing 🎃 so we have a selection of spooky crafts during the week leading up to Halloween. These classes are all for adults and we even have an evening class for those of you who are busy in the daytime.
Saturday 24th October : 10.30 - 1.30pm
Halloween (or not) Enameling with award winning jeweller Stacey West : this is a three hour class where you will learn how to enamel with glass powders on to copper.
I love enamaling and think you will too!
Workshop £50 Materials £15.

Tuesday 27th October : 7 - 9pm
Plaster Relief Casting : Halloween or Nature
with Karly of La di dah pottery
This is a two hour session where you will learn how to make impressions in clay and then make a plaque with plaster. You can leave it plain or get creative with paints to decorate it.
Workshop £35 Materials £5.

Wednesday 28th October : 11am - 1pm
Crochet a pumpkin 🎃 with Megan.
This is a class for those who already have the basics of crochet, perfect for thosd who have already done a Granny Square class with me.
Workshop £20 includes materials.

Thursday 29th October : 2 - 4pm
Needlefelted Pumpkins 🎃
Come and needlefelt a pumpkin with me, perfect for beginners.
Workshop £35 includes materials.

Saturday 31st October : 1.30 - 4.30pm
Halloween Embroidery Workshop with Megan. Come and have fun with embroidery, you could make a spider web with a beaded spider, a pumpkin 🎃 a beetle or whatever your spooky little heart desires!
Workshop £50 include materials.

🗡⚔️🔫🏹WARHAMMER🏹🔫⚔️🗡
I have been busy decorating the Warhammer window this week and I'm really pleased to have a backdrop worthy of the fantastic model loaned to us by the lovely Nicholas from North Devon Rogues.
I have wallpapered, carpeted and painted, who knew i had the skills 😄 don't look too close!
We have had new sets in and the White Dwarf : Halloween edition is available in store now. Don't forget we can order anything in for you, we order on Tuesdays and stock can be with us as quick as Thursday!
Our tombola for a free goody bag is still going, one has been claimed, come in a try your luck!
