Another restoration complete and ready to return home! 🕰️✨

This wall clock came into our High Street workshop requiring quite a bit of care. The mechanism had stopped running, the timber case needed structural repair, and the original back panel was missing entirely.

No matter the condition, every treasured item has a future. Here is how we brought it back to peak condition:

Movement Replacement: Fitted a brand-new, reliable quartz mechanism to get it ticking accurately again.

Case Restoration: Repaired and stabilized the damaged woodwork.

Custom Backing: Fabricated a new dark brown hardboard back plate, finished with a protective felt lining.

Detailing & Polish: Thoroughly cleaned the entire unit and buffed the wood finish to restore its depth.

Now it looks and functions as wonderfully as the day it was made.

We recently had the absolute privilege of working on this precious keepsake.

Originally a treasured christening gift used to lull a sleeping baby, this miniature musical box holds a lifetime of memories.
Now, the owner wanted it fully restored to pass down as a heartfelt gift to her adult daughter. 🤍

When it arrived, the movement was dirty and completely non-operational. Here is how we brought the music back:
Complete Overhaul: Stripped the tiny unit down entirely to its individual components.
Mainspring Replacement: Drilled out the spring housing and specially ordered a rare, custom-sized mainspring to fit this unique Japanese Sankyo mechanism.
Precision Tuning: Re-secured the housing and carefully tuned the regulator to match the power of the new spring.
Deep Clean & Polish: Restored the intricate silver case to its original, gleaming shine and meticulously reassembled the mechanism.

Now, it plays "Where Do I Begin" just like it did decades ago, ready to create a brand-new chapter of memories. 🎶

✨ Sometimes a restoration tests your patience to the absolute limit! ✨

When this vintage Japanese black lacquer music box first landed on the workbench, it was in a bit of a state.
The musical movement was faulty and temperamental, one of the corner legs had completely broken off, and a nasty split ran right across the entire base.

To say this was a joy to restore... would be an absolute lie! 😅
After fixing the mechanical movement, repairing the broken foot, and securing the split base, it was time to touch up the missing paintwork and give it a thorough clean.
But that is precisely where the real nightmare began.
The more I examined the box, the more the original lacquer and delicate artwork began flaking off. In an effort to stabilise the surface, I applied a clear resin coating—which promptly reacted with the original finish, leaving a dreadful, bumpy, lined mess instead of a smooth gloss!

It took painstaking hand-sanding to remove the reacted layer without destroying the original detail underneath.
Once clear, I carefully re-painted the missing areas using colour-matched acrylics blended with acrylic varnish, followed by a water-based glaze topcoat.

After hours of wet sanding all the way up to 5,000 grit, I finally achieved that deep, glossy, mirror-like finish. Phew! Got there in the end! 🛠️

A massive shout-out to Mr & Mrs Owen for their unbelievable patience and for trusting me with this challenging piece!

📖 Backstory & History of the Piece:
This item is a classic vintage Japanese styed black lacquer musical jewellery box, produced between the 1950s and 1970s during the post-WWII export boom.
Artisans crafted these pieces for international markets, combining traditional urushi style lacquering techniques with hand-painted maki-e artwork featuring iconic scenes of Mount Fuji, cherry blossoms (sakura), and coastal landscapes.

The lid perimeter features an iridescent inlaid mother-of-pearl (raden) border, housing an internal spring-driven mechanical music movement that plays when the lid is lifted.

This vintage Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit figurine came into our Blackwood High Street workshop suffering from severe glaze flaking and paint loss along his jacket and the perch of his robin friend.

Rather than letting it deteriorate, we put it through a complete conservation process:

1️⃣ Sanded back the damaged porcelain and removed all loose, friable glaze.

2️⃣ Applied a colour-matched resin filler to level out the surface flush with the original body.

3️⃣ Hand-painted and blended the missing details to match the original coat and robin plumage.

4️⃣ Sealed everything with a protective cold top-coat glaze for a seamless finish.

Now he’s back to full health and ready to take pride of place on the shelf once again!

Back to Life on Blackwood High Street! 📻✨

Another classic saved from the scrapheap! A customer recently brought this vintage Binatone Musiclock into the workshop with lots of issues on arrival.

Upon opening it up, the internal slider switches were solid with decades of dust build-up. Worse still, the original rubber keypad mat had completely perished—it was rock hard, with two of the button caps entirely missing!

Here’s how we brought this 1970s gem back to life:
1. hand made a brand-new custom keypad mat to replace the perished rubber.
2. Deep-cleaned and deoxidised all internal slider switches.
3. Carried out a full electronic overhaul and thorough clean inside and out.
4. Passed a full PAT test for complete electrical safety.

It’s now fully working, safe, and ready for another 50 years of daily service! 🎶
