Well, that was a warm one this week! A straightforward kitchen refresh for a new local client that's white all round so superficially, it looked no different when we'd done, but if you look closer, there's a huge difference in the finish and quality.

Everywhere dustless sanded as always where possible, hand sanded where not, cleaned and then given two coats of trade quality paint.

🎨 Ceiling in Tikkurila AR2.
🎨 Walls in Johnstone's Acrylic Durable Matt.
🎨 Woodwork in Johnstone's Aquaguard satin.

There's some pictures in the comments of the protection we put in place for the various surfaces, i.e. hard floor protection, plastic sheeting over the units, radiator & door, and tape where needed. Nobody wants to see their possessions covered in paint spatter, drips (it happens 😊), mess etc., so we go the extra mile to make sure everything is covered and protected.

A lounge refresh last week in for a new client in Burley in Wharfedale. There's no "before" pictures as the colour scheme is exactly the same.

What was in theory a straightforward job turned out to be a bit more involved as once the radiator was removed. the wallpaper behind it was in a shocking state so we set about sorting that out. The old paper pretty much fell off and revealed some foil backed insulation, also very poorly adhered. All this was removed and neatly cut back, sanded, sealed with Zinsser Gardz and replaced using Wallrock Dampstop Thermic and Fibreliner Smooth. Once the joins to the existing lining paper were filled and painted, it was an invisible join.

🎨 Ceiling in Johnstone's Covaplus, colour matched to F&B "Wimbourne White".
🎨 Walls in Johnstone's Covaplus, colour matched to Dulux "Gentle Fawn".
🎨 All the woodwork, including the display cabinets in Johnstone's Aquaguard white satin.

We finished the large open plan kitchen, dining room and lounge this week that we posted earlier showing the initial prep work. Superficially, the rooms look the same as it was new white over old white, but close up, the effort and use of quality materials really shows.

Being an open plan area, it's been quite disruptive for the clients, but they've been absolutely great, and their patience whilst we've effectively taken over the ground floor for a fortnight has been appreciated.

We had a little break last week for some spring sunshine, so started midweek on this large open plan lounge/diner/kitchen plus utility and entrance. As yet there's little to actually see but thought it worth showing how much prep there is involved before even opening a tin of paint.

We've put down hard floor protector everywhere, covered the fixtures and cabinets etc with plastic sheeting and covered the furniture that can't be removed with dust sheets. The light fittings have been removed where possible and the remaining spot lights lowered with SPOT DROPS®.

There's around two days of sanding to look forward to now to get everything ready for painting but the results will be worth it.

Our diary for the summer is filling up fast and we're now looking at taking bookings from around the back end of July.

We've been at a new client this week over in Burley in Wharfedale turning their white sun porch & WC extension, well .......white!

When the builders did their decoration, they used contract matt and a poor quality woodwork paint and sort of just slapped it on which showed when you looked at it properly, not a good finish. As usual, we gave everything a good sand down before applying the new top quality trade paints and now it really does look white.

🎨 Walls and ceiling in Johnstone's Trade Acrylic Durable matt in white.
🎨 Woodwork in Johnstone's Trade Aquaguard satin in white.

We'll be returning to this client in a few weeks to do their kitchen, stairs and bathroom.

Barring any hiccups, we're now fully booked until July.

I don't think we've ever done such a dramatic transformation on a room as this one.

As you can see from the movie, the room was very heavily ni****ne stained, so the first thing to do was clean everywhere with degreaser to remove the surface layer, followed by a coat of stain block (two coats on the ceiling) to lock in the stain. There's some pics in the comments showing that process.

Once that'd been done, it was a case of painting as usual, white ceilings & woodwork, and a bright minty green on the walls and cupboard doors and we also replaced all the stained caulk around the window and patio door.

To make it easier to maintain in future, we've used a durable matt on the ceiling and acrylic eggshell on the walls.

🎨 Ceiling in WRX durable matt in white.
🎨 Walls in Johnstone's Trade Acrylic Eggshell in "Secret Crush".
🎨 Woodwork in Benjamin Moore's Scuff-X in "Super White".
🎨 Cupboard doors in Tikkurila Everal Aqua 10 in "Spa" (something we had left over from another job but it worked perfectly).

Thanks to Turner & Wood Decorating Supplies for the wall and ceiling paints.

We've currently got a couple of weeks free in May and then we're into July from new bookings.

We were back at the same client again to give the conservatory a refresh so it's all ready for summer (should it ever get here 😊).

Everywhere was dustless sanded as usual and as all the woodwork was yellowed, oil-based gloss, required a coat of grip primer to prepare it for the new water-based top coat.

We tried a new paint on the walls, Optiva Nature 5 from Tikkurila. This is still a high quality durable paint, but more eco-friendly in its content and packaging and has zero VOCs (the nasty smelly stuff) so better for everyone's health and also the planet. To be fair, most of the paints we use are low VOC and we only use high ones where the situation absolutely demands it, e.g. priming varnish with shellac. It's slightly more expensive than "standard" paint, but having now used it, we're going to try and promote this as our healthier, eco-friendly option.

🎨 Walls in Tikkurila Optiva Nature 5 matt colour matched to Dulux "Coastal Glow".
🎨 Ceiling in WRX CeilingPro white matt.
🎨 Woodwork in Benjamin Moore's Scuff-X super-white satin.

We're now taking bookings from around the middle of May onwards.

We were busy doing a dining/games room overhaul last week for a new client.

They had removed the old wallpaper revealing the original pink paint and a very poor finish, full of gouges and holes plus the plasterer hadn't bothered removing the wallpaper before patching so lots of prep required here. All the large holes filled and sanded and then lined with Wallrock Smooth.

The rest of the walls, which we assumed were lined, turned out to be decorative wallpaper, probably from the '80s judging by the pattern, it's amazing what you find when you do the right prep. So these were lightly sanded just to try and iron out the worst of the lumps and bumps and filled where necessary.

Again, it's doing the right prep that reveals what's happened previously and what we thought was decent paint on the woodwork turned out to be some water-based paint that had simply been put on over oil-based gloss so it just started to peel off as soon as we started sanding. All of this had to be removed before priming with grip primer so this job took a bit longer than anticipated.

There was nothing to be done with the ceiling, it's old '60s/'70s Artex so probably had asbestos in it. This wasn't disturbed, just painted.

🎨 Ceiling in WRX CeilingPro ultra flat white matt.
🎨 Walls in Johnstone's Trade Durable Matt tinted in Little Greene's "China Clay".
🎨 Woodwork in Benjamin Moore Scuff-X in "Super White"

We're back again next week to work on the conservatory which will hopefully be a bit more straightforward.
