If you're getting smoke blowing back in this cold weather, click on the link below to see what causes it and how to stop it.

My personal advice is to light a firelighter on it's own with both vents open and let it burn out while you make yourself a brew, firelighters create heat with barely any smoke so as well as pushing out the cold air plug and pre heating the chimney it also takes out of the equation, smoke pouring into your room.
After doing this, start again by building your fire using the upside down method (Google it).
2 small logs on the bottom with a small gap between them and pop a firelighter in the gap unlit.
About 15 pieces of kindling bridgeing across the gap between the logs jenga style.
Pop a firelighter on top and light that firelighter.
Put a few more bits of kindling around firelighter to help catch.
Make sure both vents are still open and close door when flames are established (about a minute)
Go and put your feet up, it takes a little bit longer to get going but you shouldn't get any smoking back and it will burn better and cleaner.
