I had tickets to this year’s Festival of Quilts and had booked myself onto a workshop with Timi Nicholson but wasn’t able to go so I decided to treat myself to catherine-marie longtin’s book on Log Cabin blocks. I’m treating myself to a little jolly in my home town, London, catching up with old friends, cinema and theatre visits as well as a visit to probably one of my favourite museums, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and managed to see the Schiaparelli exhibition. Simply fabulous. Of course as a patchwork/quilt creator this piece caught my attention.

I’ve been on a longish train journey which means just one thing … some hand stitching. I usually choose some Boro stitching but I’m trying something new. I may or may not reveal the finished piece as it’s a bit ‘out there’. It may be a complete failure. All I’ll say is that involves an old linen shirt of mine. I was getting some very puzzled looks on the train.

Called Illusion or Cotton Reels? I started off by making a couple of wall hangings - see last two photographs. Then I decided on something on a much larger scale. At the start the size was undecided. Once I was happy with the size I stopped but discovered I had a couple of blocks leftover, which I made into a tote bag. The bag sold a short while ago. With the wall hangings and tote bag I machine quilted in narrow vertical lines. However with the patchwork I hand quilted it. The backing fabric is a modern print from Robert Kaufman Fabrics

I’ve called this quilt ‘Indian Summer’. I used Moda Fabrics United Notions | Top fabric & notions distributor Grunge. In case you hadn’t noticed I’ve been creating a lot of quilts with inset organic shapes and this quilt has 100 hundred of them. For each block I inset the shape into the contrasting background fabric. The backing fabric is a modern print with an Aztec vibe

For the last few months or so I’ve been working on projects that involve insetting organic shapes. For this quilt I used the shapes left over from another quilt and instead of insetting them into the white background fabric the shapes were appliquéd by hand and I then hand quilted around the inside of the shapes. I used Moda Fabrics United Notions | Top fabric & notions distributor Grunge which has an appealing mottled appearance.
