Weekly update, manual version.

Steady week this week, which I don’t see as a negative. Obviously I’d love to be making millions but I’ll take steady over dead every week.

We were closed for bank holiday Monday. It’s something I’ve put a lot of thought into. Working in the retail sector you need to be open when people are wanting to shop, but equally from past experience we generally don’t see any trade on bank holidays. I think people assume being a small family business we are probably closed. For better or worse we do tend to close on bank holidays.

So Monday reduced the week to 4 days, I took Wednesday afternoon off and my parents did a runner at 12.30 today (I’ll deduct their wages, worry not) so it made a fairly busy day on Thursday for deliveries. The bank holiday also puts pressure on incoming deliveries meaning an early alarm for me to be at the shop for 7 to unload a wagon. We had a decent day of deliveries and then after work I went to the recycling centre so it was an early start and a late finish. I’m not moaning, that’s just how it goes sometimes.

I forgot to mention this in my video but my niece joined me for the day on Tuesday. She had the choice of a day with her brother up at grannie’s or a day at the shop with me, and she chose her favourite uncle, or Auntie Dave as she likes to call me…. She was fired up to greet customers and make some sales but sadly the only person to come in before she had to leave was the postie. And she’s already had 2 beds off us this year so no luck there.

The shop has been steady this week but we have had a few incoming deliveries late today so will be keeping ourselves entertained in the van next week.

Speaking of deliveries, it’s almost exclusively been bungalows and downstairs rooms. That has been really welcome as I’ve been carrying an injury this week.

We’ve sold a picture 🙌, we don’t sell many but this one is going to a couple who have had some off us in the past.

Sold and delivered a mattress at very short notice.

Had a customer postpone a delivery, then at the 11th hour revert back to the original plan. Caused a mild panic for a few minutes but we figured out a way.

Walked into the shop to hear my mum and a lady discussing how to murder their husbands. I figured out they were discussing snoring so I’m hoping they were joking. Best check if mum has updated your life insurance Nige!

We are heading to York to deliver a bed next week. Need to book it in once it’s arrived on Monday. Nige like a trip out.

Small world moment of the week - talking to a customer about his career path and he served his apprenticeship at the same engineering firm that my dad worked until his retirement from the industry - Habrough Fabrication.

Spent more money at Hansons Tyres. Not on eggs sadly, had a puncture sorted. Thanks guys.

That’s as much as I can remember, once again I’ve not made many notes this week, I need to put a bit more effort in.

I’m in the shop tomorrow from 9.30-3. Come in and cheer me up.

Seven more days of bed retail.

It’s been noticeably busier in the shop this week. We’ve had more people through the door than we would usually see which is very welcome, especially after the last few months.

It’s been a decent mix of young and old, returning customers and new. Plenty placed orders and a few were looking and may come back in the future.

We’ve got a new model on the floor. I had two separate customers interested in one of our package deals but both found the mattress to be too soft. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard this so I had a chat with the manufacturer and they’ve put a new package together with a medium feel mattress of the same quality. Both customers came back to try it, both customers bought it. Happy days. We are running with this model now and offering the softer feel as an alternative.

We’ve had some flowers gifted from a grateful customer. One bunch for my mum and the other for my wife as they were so pleased with the service we offered. We really don’t expect this at all but it does cheer up our day. Thank you!

I often bang on about the varied and interesting people we get to meet. A while ago we delivered to a chap who had written a book about his travels, he popped into the shop with a copy and signed it for me, I look forward to diving into it. It is called Around the World on a Pound a Day by Andrew Markham.

This leads me nicely onto a customer we took a new mattress to this week. I spied a couple of model cars in a display cabinet, all either Lotus, or Lotus engineered cars. The chap was head hunted by Lotus to be part of their engineering team. I regret not asking if he was involved in the Lotus Carlton, one of my all time favourite cars but the conversation quickly turned to Marshall tractors where he, his father and his grandfather all worked. I might have got my details wrong but I believe he is now the president of the Marshall Club. He had loads of interesting stories and photos.

I tripped over a step. I knew the step was there. But still fell over. There were some sniggers. I was a brave boy though and held back the tears.

We have had more than our share of short notice deliveries this week. A double needed for a guest bed, sorted same day. A single ordered at 4pm, delivered 15 minutes later. Straight after this we had a couple in the shop who had ordered a mattress on the internet which they hadn’t been able to try. It had arrived and was described as springs with a bit of material on top. Needless to say that one is going back and they came to us. Thankfully we had something in stock that suited their needs and budget and they were able to take it away with them.

Finally i unknowingly arrived at the door of my childhood baby sitter. Is not seen her in 40 years so it was strange to be in the presence of someone who knows me but I don’t really know them! She recognised Big Nige immediately and even lied and said he hasn’t changed!

So that’s my week.

Mum is manning the shop tomorrow, come in and keep her busy.

We are not opening on Monday as we are having some valuable family time.

Now and again we arrive at a customers house for a delivery to find a trail of old curtains and sheets from the front door, up the staircase and into the bedroom.

There’s no need to do this, we are happy to take our shoes off. Sometimes customers tell us it doesn’t matter, but it does to us. Imagine if we had stepped in something horrible and spread it all over your house.

It only takes a couple of extra seconds and we are well practiced at kicking them off whilst walking backwards with a heavy mattress. Sometimes we do it without even missing a step.

The only time it has proved to be an issue is when I had to do a delivery out of hours and I took my niece with me, she was 7 or 8 at the time. I warned the customer that I’d have to bring her, and she was good as gold the whole time, I could hear her and the customer chatting in the hallway. Best behaviour, posh voice, the works.
Sadly for me she had used up all of her “being good” credits and as soon as we were out the door she kicked my shoe half way across the front garden. It was like a Pavlovian response to seeing my shoe there, she absolutely couldn’t stop herself and if went an impressive distance.

It was a cold January night and it was throwing it down with rain. It amused me at the time but my cold, cramp, soggy foot didn’t see the funny side by the time we’d got back from Market Rasen.

Another week of bed retail.

Before I start, there’s likely way more interesting stuff i could be talking about but if I don’t write it down I soon forget. I’ve literally just remembered two interesting things that I forgot to mention on the video. I need more practice at this!

So let’s kick off, the shop has been steady with a good mix of people with many different needs, some browsing, some buying, some too scared to make the final colour choice on their own…

The steady streak continues. Steady isn’t a negative to me. I can cope with steady. If the door is opening now and again I’m happy. We had one incredible day, the kind that comes once every 3 months or so. Most of these sales were from people who had been in before, gone away to think things over then all decided to come back to order. I’m glad you did, thank you.

We are still seeing a mix of returning customers, recommendations and new customers, all young and old.

I don’t recall any octogenarians this week.

Mum has been doing a grand job in the shop. We left her on her own almost all day on Wednesday as me and Big Nige went off to Middle Earth on our own little side quest. Well, we went to West Yorkshire to drop off some mattresses for recycling, collect a few bits from some suppliers and visit the Highgrove Beds factory.

We love a factory visit. We have seen everything from tiny cottage industry manufacturers to the biggest in the game. Highgrove are heading towards the latter. They are a family run business and operate one of the largest bed production spaces in England. The site covers around 450,000 square feet. There are a lot of automated processes, lots of computer intervention, the scale of everything was massive, but two things stood out to me.

Firstly I didn’t see a single member of the production team who didn’t seem genuinely pleased to see the production manager who took us around. It absolutely seems a decent place to work.

Secondly, they have Llamas! Theres a strip of land around the factory which wasn’t used, so they’ve only gone and got a load of llamas. Apparently most of the staff will visit them in their lunch breaks, and it’s not unknown for the owner to conduct meetings and interviews in the llama field. I absolutely love this, high tech factory, solar panels, 40 wagons, amazing stock control, and llamas. Fabulous.

Our day out on Thursday put a bit of pressure on today’s deliveries, it’s been pretty heavy but we got through without any drama.

Injuries. Dads got an iffy knee from his years as a steel fabricator and it’s given him a bit of grief this week, and I’ve managed to pull a muscle in my back so it’s been a difficult week all round. Thankfully I’ve had the help of a couple of friends who were happy to step in for my dad. I just struggled on (sympathy please)

Forgotten interesting thing no. 1.
I delivered a mattress, went back to the van to be greeted by a chap from across the road. I wondered what I’d done wrong but it turned out to be my dad’s cousin! Small world.

Forgotten interesting thing no. 2.
There’s been a nautical theme to Wednesday. First delivery we noticed several pictures with military references, it turns out they had a family member who worked on submarines.
The very next delivery, more pictures and memorabilia and he was also in the Royal Navy with a couple of interesting (although not appropriate for here) stories to tell.

Two embarassing moments this week, firstly delivering the wrong bed to a customer. I’ll admit, it’s my fault. I tried my best but I couldn’t figure out a way to blame my mum or dad so I’ll have to admit it. All me. I loaded the van wrong. To make matters worse the customer noticed but “didn’t want to cause a fuss” bless them. One phone call, one return trip and problem solved. They still maintained they didn’t mind.

Second is a bit more complex.
Superking size bed into a house that is being renovated. They came in and chose the bed they loved. When the time drew closer I ordered it in, it arrived, delivery scheduled. Happy days. Customer called to hold off delivery for a week, no drama, it happens and we can cope with this.

New delivery day is here. Van loaded and we arrive bang on time (first one of the day so it makes it a lot easier to be on schedule)

We take one section of the base upstairs, usually the ceiling opens up when you get to the top, this one doesn’t, it’s touch and go. We try a few different angles, turn the base around, up a step, down a step, to you-to me. This base isn’t going up. It’s really close, inches away but I’m not prepared to damage someone’s wall and I dont want to damage the bed either. So I run through some alternatives with the customer. But they have other ideas.

We try again from an angle I hadn’t considered and it’s really close, closer than I’d managed to get it but it still won’t slip through as the banister was in the way. After a bit of grunting and groaning the customer grabbed the banister, pulled it a few inches which allows the base to JUST slip through. Elation (and and actual high 5, I believe my first on a bed delivery)

It was quite embarrassing that I’d written this off only for it to happen, but in my defence we do prioritise not damaging customers homes in order to make our life easier.

This Highgrove bed is rapidly becoming one of our best sellers.

It sits in the top quarter of our range so is far from a cheap bed, but it is a really good bed with loads of options for tweaking it to make it just so.

It is available in all sizes, in a range of colours and fabrics. The mattress is pocket sprung with a cool foam and cool cover, it isn’t ridiculously deep and has great edge support. It is available in soft, medium or firm feel. There are options for headboard design and height, including floor standing and some premium upholstered options which are double the thickness of a regular headboard. The base comes with two drawers as standard but it can be upgraded to 4 drawers, including smaller drawers to clear bedside cabinets, or you can specify gas lift ottoman or electric lift ottoman. I’m not a mathematician, but that’s a lot of variants.

The options only matter if it’s comfortable though, and we haven’t had a single person try this and it not be on their shortlist.

Drawers are not always a suitable storage solution so this bed was spec’d with an end slide store instead. This opens up the whole of the inside of one half of the bed and gives more storage space than a pair of drawers.

Granted it isn’t as easy to get to your stowed away items but it is a solution where other options don’t work.

The customer chose a good mattress too, the Wold. Medium feel, pocket sprung with foam and a perfectly flat top, ideal for those who are sensitive to the feeling of tufts.

To cap it off, this was delivered to a house we have been to many times before, thanks for the continued support and trust.
