Another week ticked off.

This week’s trade has been as diverse as this week’s weather.

Saturday was steady, mainly orders for spare rooms. I’ll take that though.

I was expecting Monday to be quiet, as last week wasn’t great, but I was kept on my feet with several customers in the shop.

The first set the tone, coming in to buy a mattress and leaving with two.

The next customer, exactly the same. That’s a good way to start a week for sure.

Tuesday continued the previous day’s pattern, with plenty of activity in the shop. I also had a few incoming deliveries, which caused a bit of chaos, but I managed to find a temporary home for most of it.

The day was capped off with an emergency delivery of a single bed to a young chap.

Mum and Dad returned on Wednesday. Dad and I had a few deliveries to get through while Mum held the fort. Sadly, it was a quiet day for her, with very few people coming in. I’ll dock her wages.

One delivery was the easiest you could imagine. Sensible-weight mattress, bungalow, bedroom right opposite the front door. Every other delivery was either awkward, heavy or time-consuming. But we live for it.

Thursday was incredibly quiet, but it picked up today, both in the shop and out delivering.

We’ve had three customers in the shop over 80. And if you’re up to date with these posts, you’ll know how I know they’re over 80…

The majority of this week’s customers have bought from us before and are coming back for more. One or two came off the back of a recommendation from a friend, and one couple hunted us down after reading a glowing online review.

A couple of floor models have sold this week too. I’ll update soon with which models are taking their place. One is a really good-quality upholstered frame with a pocket-sprung base.

Other exciting news, we have some extra-large feather pillows incoming, perfect for super king-size beds. They should be arriving in a couple of weeks.

I’m desperately trying to think of something hilarious that Nige has done this week, but he’s been fairly well behaved for a change. There’s the usual confusion between left and right, and his black-and-white brain taking everything I say completely literally, but that’s all fairly normal.

So, nothing overly exciting this week, but it’s felt good to be a bit busier.

Mum is in charge tomorrow, so come in and make her earn her wages!

One of today’s deliveries was this Denby divan.

Firm pocket spring mattress, fancy headboard, matching base in this case upgraded with 2 drawers. Delivered within a week of ordering huge choice of colours.

But enough about the bed, Big Nige now knows where Malta is.

Last job on Monday is to make room for incoming deliveries on Tuesday.

They have both arrived (at the same time…) so now Tuesday becomes an hour of working out what is stock, what is sold, finding out when it’s being delivered and getting it in the warehouse in a sensible manner.

Guaranteed I’ll put something at the back that needs to be at the front.

I’m not complaining though, get your orders in and make next Tuesday a nightmare for me!

Another week has flown by, helped along by a shorter working week thanks to the bank holiday, which has also pushed most of my incoming deliveries back this week. From a business perspective I wish bank holidays didn’t exist…

It’s been the quietest week of the year so far. We’ve had people through the door every day, which is good, but it’s been noticeably quiet. School holidays plus the heat equals nobody buying beds. Sucks to be me.

On the plus side, the warehouse is tidy for a change, I’ve managed to get a bit more painting done with some help from Mave off the telly, and we’ve been discussing a couple of new beds to go on the shop floor.

I’ve also cleaned out some guttering. It’s not all rock and roll.

Oh, and I finished the VAT return for the last quarter. Sexy stuff.

What’s Mum been up to? Taking it easy because apparently all you lot decided to take a week off from buying beds. She did manage to sell a headboard half price though. Go Mum.

A chap came in wanting a cheap headboard. We had one ex-display that I’d priced at £50. Mum told him it is £25…He came back the next day and I thought he was windong me up when he said “the young lady in the shop said it was £25.” He wasn’t 😂. Thanks mum….

Nige is definitely in holiday mode I think. Mum was giving him plenty of orders today and he was huffing and puffing like a spoilt teenager. One more week Dad. Stay strong.

We delivered a bed today to a chap in desperate need. He’d been to E & M in his hometown of Kirton but they couldn’t help given his specific requirements (there were quite a few), so they suggested he give us a try. He did, he’s happy, I’m happy, E & M maybe less so… Similar to ourselves, I’m sure they would rather miss a sale than try and sell something that isn’t right. Thanks guys.

Customer of the week goes to the 95-year-old lady who told me her age three times. I swear once people hit 80 they need you to know exactly how old they are. She wanted a medium feel double mattress with a very flat top. We had a couple of options at different price points and she’s chosen well. We’ll deliver that next week.

One bit of excitement I missed off last week - we’ve had new lights fitted in the shop. They’re ridiculously bright and a lovely crisp white, which makes a massive difference because we have very little natural light in most of the showroom. It genuinely looks better.

We’ve also had a couple of gifts this week from happy customers, a plant that I’ll try not to kill, and a couple of bottles of red that my dad definitely will. Thank you, it’s never necessary but it’s always appreciated.

I delivered to another amazing house tucked away in the countryside this week too. I’m fairly sure my entire house would fit inside their living room. Fair play to them.

That’s about it really. Nothing amazing happened, nothing terrible happened… that I know of yet.

I’m in the shop tomorrow from 9:30 till 3, so feel free to call in and spend all your money. Or some of it. I’m happy with some.

We had a delivery from Shed Beds this morning, and one customer was ready for theirs straight away.

These beds are made in Nottingham and built properly, with some of the best slats in the business.

Available in a choice of wood finishes, plus a huge selection of Farrow & Ball colours.

We’ve got a Super King on display, feel free to pop in and have a butchers.

Are you hot in bed?

I’m not about to tell you I can sell you a mattress that’ll keep you cold in temperatures like we’re experiencing right now. What I can tell you is that some mattresses sleep noticeably cooler than others.

I’d advise a bit of caution when shopping if the sales patter promises a mattress that “keeps you cool all night”. Cooler, yes. Ice cold for eight hours in a heatwave? Probably not.

As a rough guide, natural fillings tend to sleep cooler than man-made ones. If your current mattress is full of polyester fillings, switching to natural materials could make a huge difference.

Wool is excellent at temperature regulation, it’s literally its job on a sheep. We also stock mattresses with camel hair fillings, which are brilliant for regulating heat and moisture too. Latex is another good option, it offers some of the pressure relief people like from memory foam, but usually with less heat retention.

Memory foam is still foam, and foam naturally traps more heat than traditional fillings. That said, modern foams have improved massively over the last 10 years. Open-cell foams and cooling gels have helped reduce the “sleeping hot” reputation memory foam used to have.

Some mattresses also use “cool touch” fabrics. These feel lovely when you first get into bed, cool, crisp, fresh. They won’t stay cold all night, but when you roll over at 3am and find a cooler patch, it’s a bit like flipping your pillow over to the cold side.

So, if sleeping cool is your priority, look for natural fillings and breathable covers like cotton.

We’ve got more than 25 mattresses in the shop to try, and the shop is lovely and cool today.

Another week, another cancelled order. Standard 😂 Why is it always the first person through the door on a Monday morning?

Thankfully it didn’t set the tone for the week and we’ve had a steady stream through the door. A few younger customers, mostly 40+, and a smattering of 80+ customers, who always make sure to tell you they’re over 80 😂 Also more repeat customers and recommendations, so thank you all.

We had a couple in for a good length of time giving several mattresses a proper test. They didn’t place an order, hopefully they’ll be back, but it’s genuinely good to see people putting care and attention into choosing their next mattress. We’re more than happy for you to come in and have a really good lay on the mattresses, it’s literally the reason we have a showroom.

Loads of smaller incoming deliveries on Tuesday, most of which have now been delivered.

Managed to slice the very tip of my finger off. We won’t go into that bit. Clearly it’s Nige’s fault.

Had a chap in needing a mattress for the next day, sorted him out no problem.

The very next customer also had a tight timeframe, but the bed he chose wasn’t in stock and wouldn’t be available for another week. One quick phone call and a few favours pulled later, I had the bed with me within 48 hours, then delivered to him within 30 minutes. This isn’t always possible, but we do always try our best.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s amazing the pool of talent we have in this area. A casual conversation led to the revelation that I was talking to a world record holder in the rowing scene. A week earlier I was in the presence of a World Champion martial artist

I’ve found a new recycling place and they are brilliant. Multi-award winners in their field and right at the top of their game. Old mattresses are stripped down, the different materials are sorted and graded, then sent off in all directions for processing and reuse.

Around 7 million mattresses are disposed of every year in the UK, and currently less than 25% avoid landfill. Almost 10% of all fly-tipping is mattresses. It’s 2026. These figures shouldn’t exist.

This isn’t the cheapest way to dispose of mattresses, but I’m happy to be part of the solution rather than the problem.

We delivered a mattress to a customer whose friend had given them a bed, but it had been built wonky, so we offered to rebuild it and make it right.

We also sorted a warranty issue on a bed where a bolt had come adrift. Not ideal, but these things happen from time to time. We got it sorted as quickly as we could and had a Plan B in case we couldn’t. Customer happy.

Blowing the trumpet of independent retail abit, but that probably wouldn’t have been sorted so easily if it had been bought online. Just saying.

We had the air con fixed at Hansons too, thanks for a great service.

Electric bed delivered up an awkward staircase in the heat 🥵

We delivered to an amazing house full of 1920s-40s memorabilia. I could have spent hours in there, it was like a little museum. The bed they chose fitted the theme of the home perfectly.

The very next delivery was to a house built for management at the steelworks in the 1920s. It was in lovely condition and largely untouched, which must be really rare these days. Even the kitchen was mostly original. The house has clearly had 100 years of careful and sympathetic owners.

Now and again there’s a delivery you dread. Thursday offered one of those.

The customer had called in a few weeks ago and explained that access upstairs was incredibly restricted. He already knew about rolled mattresses and suggested that would be the way forward.

The delivery of his current mattress had involved ladders, ropes, removing a window, bending the mattress into a shape no mattress has any business being bent into, and no doubt quite a bit of swearing.

I knew the new mattress would be fine. It’s a good quality pocket sprung/memory/gel mattress that comes rolled up. I was more worried about getting the old one down.

We went prepared with knives and bolt cutters, thinking worst case we’d cut it in half. As it turned out, time had taken its toll on the mattress and, although heavy and awkward, it had lost enough integrity to bend quite a lot, so it slipped down with relative ease.

Got away with that one.

This has turned into a bit of an epic write-up, but it’s been a fairly eventful week. Serves me right for having a few days off last week!

It might be el scorchio outside but thanks to this old building is only 17° inside, it’s like we have air-con.

Surely it’s worth the cost of a new bed to come and spend half an hour in the cool? I think that’s a great idea personally..

I’ve just come back from a few days away in Cornwall with family.

It was much needed and we had a great time. The cottage was lovely, but the beds were terrible. Everything else was spot on, brand new kitchen, comfy sofa, plush carpets etc, but the owners definitely skimped on the mattress budget.

We often see customers come back from holiday after sleeping brilliantly and suddenly realise their own bed is well past its best.

This time it was the complete opposite for me. I couldn’t wait to get back into my own bed and stop waking up in agony.

There’s nothing like a holiday to expose a bad mattress, one way or another.

Weekly update time…

It’s been a fairly quiet week both in the shop and out delivering.

I’ve rewarded myself with a couple of days away in Cornwall with the wife and the in-laws so I’m on my best begaviour. Monday and Tuesday were spent making sure everything could run smoothly for my parents for the rest of the week. Thankfully, everything seems to have gone smoothly. Or so I’m led to believe.

The cottage we’re staying in does, however, have absolutely terrible mattresses, which feels a bit like a wasted opportunity.

My mum reports a steady stream of customers in the shop, a few looking, a few buying. We’re grateful for every bit of business we get, but it’s definitely been on the quieter side this week.

That said, we’ve still sold a couple of divan package deals, a high-end bed and an electric bed, so I can’t complain too much while I’m sat here eating pasties and drinking Radler.

We’ve had an issue to deal with on a set of drawers we sold last year. I believe my dad has done some serious Nigelling and found a solution to the issue.

My mum is in the shop tomorrow from 9:30 to 3:00, so if you fancy placing a massive order and rescuing the week, feel free.
