This vintage Uşak kilim, with its unusual near-square shape and understated geometric design woven in hand-spun wool, is very much a one-of-a-kind rug. Flat-woven rather than knotted, it is made by passing weft threads tightly over and under the warp creating a dense, tightly structured rug with a design that looks almost identical on both sides, just as kilims have been made in this region for generations🌸

Because kilims were made for home use rather than export, weavers were free to follow their own instincts, and every piece carries something of the individual who made it. Uşak kilims typically feature geometric or striped patterns, and the simple but quietly compelling designs are a lovely reflection of that personal, unhurried tradition🌸

Uşak itself has been at the heart of Turkish weaving for centuries, with roots stretching back through the Lydian and Phrygian eras. Weaving rose to prominence during the Seljuk period, when locally sourced wool and natural dyes gave the region’s textiles a quality recognised far beyond its borders and the tradition continues there to this day🌸

One of our large Afghan Baluch cushions has found its home here . We stuffed it to the requirements of our customer Jane so it wasn’t too full but not too flat so it sits perfectly on the sofa without being too bulky but also offering support. 🌹 We think it fits in nicely with the other lovely cushions and rugs she has in her home 🏠
